Cool Oish

Something's really really wrong with my computer. I'm going to describe what's messing up, and hopefully someone will be able to tell me what's wrong and how to fix it.

On Saturday night, when I was starting up, my computer beeped around 6 times, and stopped when I disconected the keyboard and the power plug [It's a laptop] It scared the hell out of me, but my computer acted normally and what not. Today, when I was just doing my own thing, it beeped and Firefox froze up and died. Now everything is delaying to respond and my CPU Usage is up to 100% even though I only have three programs running. Can anyone tell me what's going on with my computer?

Sounds similar to whats going on to mine. I've come to the conclusion that I have my laptop on for too long and it just over heats.

Your cpu usage jumping from 11 to 72 for a second isn't alarming. Some sites sometimes require Firefox to use more CPU power in order to parse the whole thing faster. As for beeping, well, I understand it is morse code, but it's usually when you are MISSING a keyboard or a mouse or some peripheral it deems "useful" (I'm not too sure on that last bit, but I know it does beep when you're missing those ).

I booted up this morning and it's as if nothing happened.

Overheating's quite possible, especially if it's a high-end laptop - more info on that plz. If it's somewhat older, might be the cooling fins are dusty and as a result can't properly expel heat anymore.

However, in a worse case, it might be a technical problem. I dunno the exact make of the BIOS you're using, the amount of beeps varies - at one, it's a number of beeps, with another it's a combination of long and short beeps). One site says that six beeps indicate a keyboard problem of sorts, but that is kinda weird considering the laptop keyboard itself is always connected (in theory) and remains active even with an external keyboard.

Usually when a computer beeps it's because there's something poorly connected inside, i.e. a memory module or a video card. Laptops are harder to open though, so only check that if it happens again. Memory is usually located under the keyboard, so look up the screws at the bottom of your laptop that are indicated by an arrow or something, then lift up the keyboard and make sure it's firmly connected.

But yeah. Check for dust first, then tell me how powerful your laptop is <3.

Well, I've got a HP Pavillion. It's really new, I got it in November. The beeping stopped when I disconnected the USB keyboard, by the way.

Well if it's the same sound that the laptop makes when it's charged up you could have just left the laptop charging too long. It happens to all types of electronics when charged up too long, they'll charge up for too long and viruses will slightly inffect it and it will freez.

Beep codes at bootup are usually bad news, indicating hardware failure--but it's possible your BIOS just didn't like your USB keyboard--perhaps if you left connecting the keyboard until 'Doze loads you'll be fine.

The PC freezing when loading up Firefox sounds like really bad news. That's almost always hardware failure. If there's a software problem, Windows will normally (briefly) display a STOP error (aka BSOD) and then reboot itself, or the offending program will stop responding and throw an exception to the OS. Sudden failure to respond to keyboard or mouse input is a death rattle.

Since it's a laptop it's possible that the USB keyboard conflicts with the built-in keyboard, maybe you should try not using an external keyboard for a while and see if that makes the problem abate.
