My birthday's coming up at the end of the month and I plan on asking for a couple hundred dollars from my parents to help pay for a laptop, but I don't know which one to get. I'll be using it for World of Warcraft and homework only, so space isn't a major factor. I need at least 1G of RAM to run WoW efficiently and I'm willing to go between $400 and $800.
Any suggestions?

My laptop is pretty good, I play WoW on it, has a cool graphics card and 1GB ram, duel processors and 100GB HD.
This is the same model as mine, but a newer version I think, it's worth it, HP are excellent for laptops http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh...dv6000z_series |

Thanks for the link, Jak. Customizing now. No guarantees yet, though.

I would definatly suggest you getting a Mac becase they have a very great virus protection (absolutly NO viruses) and have word on them. But your hearing that from a lifelong Mac fan.

Dell Inspiron E1405.
My dad bought this a few months ago and it is absolutely awesome. I could go into specs, but cba to type it all out. It has a wireless card and 160 GB hard drive though. ![]() It's around $800, by the way. |

In terms of laptop vendors, I don't know who to trust anymore; A year ago today, I would have reccomended a Toshiba 100% of the way, but after the vicious, slavering Hell I went through with them in December/January of this year, I would never, ever reccomend Toshiba to anyone again; Thanks to their ****e job of warranty repair (only a 9 month warranty on that sucker btw), I now cannot run ANYTHING but Vista, which I hate. No normal XP drivers will work with the laptop's proprietary display, including Toshiba's broken restore CD, and my Gentoo disc won't even load up the installer. I'd prefer syphilis to an HPee, but if the choice is between Toshiba and HPee, go with HPee. EDIT: Although if gaming weren't part of the equation, I'd back up the recommendation of a Mac; A laptop should really only be used for music, movies, porn, and web browsing--in those fields, OSX is great. I'd rather be using Linux, personally, but for a non-technical user, Tiger's an easier OS to play with. Macs are especially good for porn, since it's pretty much immune to the viruses and spyware that come part and parcel with most internet pornography. If you want an honest opinion, a gaming rig should never be a laptop, but that's a can of worms that would threaten to derail the thread. |

i'm using an E1505 myself, but that's far out of your price range, so the 1405 sounds a little more reasonable, as long as you keep the upgrades to a minimum and remember to account for tax. the fact that you don't need a very much storage definitely helps though. you ought to try customizing a few options at Dell.com, see how it works out.

Dell.com is a good place to start. With a price range that small and with the need for only one or two high end parts, you should visit a few websites and see what they can offer you. I myself have a Sony Vaio FE890, which is out of the price range you mentioned. But check HP, Gateway, Dell and Sony out, and make sure you check out all of your options. You don't want to be in a rush to get a computer and then later on see one you could have gotten for a better deal.

Yeah, my Dell Inspiron's been really nice to me over the past two years. I think it's a 6000. Admittedly, I'm a writer and mostly use it as a jukebox and a word processor ( with a bit of Photoshopping and Redfaction when I get time ) but after a reformat last June, it hasn't really slowed down all that much.
I've got pretty minimal specs, too; just enough to be functional, y'know? |

Well, if you're not so sure about Dells, there's still tons of others out there. I spent about a week or so of actual looking for a PC. I'm glad I did. I don't have a top of the line machine, but it has Fable and Halo on it, so I'm pretty happy with it.

Dells are ugly, imo :/. I personally have a Fujitsu Siemens (I think), it's sxc, and I only paid €510 for it (it was on sale for €600 and I got a 15% discount for working at where I got it <3). It might do with a memory upgrade, but else it's a great computer. It's not too great in the graphics department (as in: it doesn't run CSS properly), but it'll do for games like Unreal Tournament and probably WoW as well (it doesn't seem to graphically demanding).
