Ok so basically my brother and I share an Internet connection(we use a router) but lately he has been using alot more bandwidth than usual. Is there anyway I can limit his Internet connection to a slower speed or something? I'm very curious on what ways I can manipulate the network.

On the router, I'm not sure. It'll probably require installing a specific router-version of Linux on it which can limit the maximum bandwidth usage of a certain IP or whatnot. A more easy solution is to forcefully install a network limiter on his computer. In the past, I've used NetLimiter, but the free version can only monitor network traffic, you need to pay cash or get it illegaly for it to actually limit.
But there should be alternatives. Else, check your router's manual and see if there's something built-in already. |

Thank you. I'll inquire into this NetLimiter right now.
Also, I don't think my computer and his are actually in a network together because I can't see any files on his network, how do I make a network ? and is it possible to do so? the router we use isn't wireless, it's all done by cords. Sorry but I'm very computer illiterate, but I'm very keen to learn.

First off, you'll need to run the Network Connection Wizard from Windows, not sure where that is again 'cause I'm in Linux right now, can't check, but whatever. It should be in the configuration screen, probably in the Network thingy. Run that, indicate that your computer is directly connected to the internet, and leave the rest of the settings default (I think). In the part where it asks for a Workgroup (basically a means to group computers in a network together), keep it default as well - MSHOME it is, if I recall correctly. Do the same on the other computer.
Now you should be able to see the other computer on the network. If not, post again with any specifics .Next, you can share folders. By default, there's a folder right in My Computer or whatnot called Shared Documents. It is a shared folder by default, meaning that every user on the network can read the files in there. If you want to share another folder, right-click it and press Sharing & Security (or something like that, my Windows is Dutch). There, select the Share This Folder (or something) radio button. If you also want to allow people to be able to change files in that folder, also check the checkbox that becomes available when pressing the radio button. This will allow others to edit files in that folder, but also to put files in there. Don't share your whole computer, just the folders you want to share, with stuff like music or specific files or whatnot. You can also password-protect the folder if you like, for some extra security in your shared pr0n folder. |

I used the wizard and once it said I had finished making the network (on this computer) I had to restart the computer, after that I went to start --> My Network Places and there was nothing in there except for "My Websites on Msn"
Not sure what's going on @_@

Well, that should be correct, yes
. The My Network Places folder is empty by default, one because nothing is shared yet, two because it takes a while for it to update. Try pressing the erm, Computers in Workgroups or something like that on the left side of the screen, that'll show you a directory of all computers currently active on your workgroup. Double-click one to see all the shared folders in there. Most shared folders on any computer will show up in the My Network Places folder / thingy later on, but first you'll have to share stuff. |

Ok that problem is now solved. Thanks alot
![]() On to the next question :P, I cannot seem to install any windows updates ie Service pack 2 or 3 from the automatic update windows thingy. They result in saying "The following update was not installed" And another problem my clock refuses to synchronize, it won't update at all, always an error. This sometimes happened when the date was wrong but it's not wrong.. not sure why it won't sync.
