The Boy Who Lived

I'm just wondering because I have an unburned ISO of Vista just waiting for me to do something with it, and I'm afraid to even bother because of all the rumors of buggery and instability.
If anyone's actually got Vista, let me know how it is and if it's really as bad as it's being made out to be. I don't want to install it for the light show and whistles. |

I haven't heard any confirmed stuff about buggery and instability. I'd say those rumors come from those who've had bad experiences with previous versions and want to wait for the first service pack to be released.
Anyways, I probably won't get Vista for a while. My desktop isn't able to run it ( I had a beta version downloaded, wouldn't install because some feature missing from my BIOS, something about advanced power management - which is bull**** btw, to have an operating system rely on that), and my laptop doesn't have enough memory to run it and still have memory left to run my Java IDE and some other stuff. Plus, it'll cost at least €130,- for an upgrade version, and you still need a legal version of XP for that. The official version is about twice as expensive. |

probably the same way you manage to run linux.:tongue2:
I was at best buy the other day and they had vista but it was way too pricey for my blood. I can't remember how much but I think they wanted $120 just for Windows XP. So you can imagine how pricey Vista would be.

I actually like Linux a lot, its pretty ****ing useless when it comes to what software you can run on it, but the only reason I am using it is to become familiar with the command line and stuff so I can run webservers better (last time I had a webserver, I had no idea how to use linux command line).
But so far I really linux, it just has **** software for it. I also hate having the compile source code and setting permissions on files, that pisses me off lol |

I plan to have Vista when I receive my new Vaio which has taken over a month to be processed -.-''. The only thing I hate about Vista, is the wait. I fall for hot designs, so maybe I shouldn't even have posted haha. Vista takes it in that department.
I'm unsure if they changed the security system either, or whether that was just for the Beta 2...I don't know. |

Ahh well, XP's fine until then I hope. Plus, what the hell is with all the versions of Vista? Stupid ways to make more money and con family's of using their PC for the price they paid for it. I myself would go the Vista Ultimate, why wait so long for the OS and not see what it can do?

Ultimate is expensive and contains loads of stuff you will probably never use. I mean, will you use Small Business Resources? Faxes? All 36 languages? Probably not.
The regular home user should get Home Premium, it's got the stuffs. |

As long as I'm not paying, I sure will. I don't want to have any limitations, as corny as that sounds. I haven't even looked into the spec.s of the other versions yet. Though the basic makes me sick, only 3 applications open at one time? Or something along those lines.

I hope I never have to upgrade to vista. I have a friend who tried the trial and he said it was ABYSMAL (and he has a kickass compy). IMO it's just made to be pretty and made to be "accessable to the more dumbass users while alienating the more advanced users" evenmore than when they released XP.
The 'Lightshow' of Vista also EATS system resources. What exactly is the point of having an OS like that, when you can't run half as much stuff on it at a time beacouse the OS takes so much? I thought XP was bad for that, but they've one-upped themselves. Even-now running your normal stuff Windows XP after the stuff you have sitting in the background can end-up eating up like 250-500Mb of RAM. It's SCARY. And what is all this getting you? PRETTY GRAPHICS AND FANCY ANIMATIONS! I would switch to something like linux, beacouse its ten times more reliable, and ten times more efficient, however then I woulden't have the software I want lol. Eating up all these resources I finds just makes things unstable lol. As-for all the various versions of vista, I think it's a crock and agree that it's just a way to make money... Someone goes "why not just get the cheap version", then realises how much it sucks and won't do what they want so they get the "mid version" or such, and thus microsoft makes twice the money. I think given the development time they took this time Vista should-of been more efficient, more flexable (not only good for low-level and intermediate users like Vista is, but easily made more congrugent to the high-end users who'll just get pissed off at the supposed 'simplicity' and inflexability). Micro-crap took much less time to develop XP diden't they? Expecially with 2000 and ME right before it. BTW one of my computers is STILL running windows ME, and it's working beautifully. While Im on my rant I might-as-well rant on the lack of DOS support since 2000/ME, it's basically impossible to really play old games like Duke Nukem 3D, Descent, etc, etc. All of wich I enjoy and really kinda wanna play agian. This is expecially the case since most audio doesn't work with DOS anymore. lol mabye I should build a new competer and slap Win95 on it? Then of course stick with XP :P okay I'm done, Cheers. |

i don't have it installed, but since i got a new computer recently, i can get it for free. i don't plan on installing this version yet though, since there's really no reason to do so. the "lightshow" you're referring to is called Aero, and without that running for the added features, it isn't so bad. even if you do have it going, the effect on resources still doesn't have any major impact on actual performance, so long as you have the reccommended specs or better. the only problem is, those specs are pretty high this time around (2GB RAM anyone?)
other than a better interface, Vista only really improves on security, but almost to the point of annoyance. for instance, i hear there is a pop-up that essentially asks you for your password everytime you do something remotely personal. this occurs less often as you use the system more and some of your choices can be saved, but only to an extent. of course, bothersome as it may be, it's still an excellent deterrent for hacking and identity theft, and i understand some other OS (Macs maybe) have used similar tactics for a while now. anyway, i wouldn't bother with Vista until it's been out for several months and can acquire some good updates. they did such a good job with XP that they couldn't blow themselves out of the water just yet.
