So lately I get mocked a lot for having Linux on my computer, which is mainly because I have a class in Linux now, and I want to learn it well so I can operate webservers through command line.
But I want to know who actually uses Linux often? And what version of linux do you use? I have Ubuntu on my home computer and Knoppix on my hard drive at school. |

I had Ubuntu running on my old PC after finding out about the Live CD. So, I installed it. I wouldn't say that I would recommend Linux over Windows any day, but it is pretty flexible and for a free OS it was pretty good.
Someone made the PS3 run Windows 2000 off YDL (Yellow Dog), which was a waste of time. But that proves what you can do. Though, I'm kind of a Linux newb really, never got in to it, I do plan to at a later stage.

I used Linux for a while, just to see if it really was as great as all the computer nerds say. It was good enough for doing some webbrowsing and PHP devving and stuff, and it had a different look. But overall, it seemed slower to me then Windows, and just didn't work as easy.
The fact that you had to dive into the root account and do stuff in the console all the time didn't help either. Sure, it's fun to find out stuff like that, but consoles are just sooo last millennium. (plus, DOS was easier )So, I went back to Windows. Easier, faster to use, less configuration, less 'zomg u nedd 2 b root 2 do taht', etcetera. Although Vista has the 'zomg u nedd 2 b admin 2 do taht' thing going on nowadays. |

Not much, actually. Unix was there first, created by an university of sorts. It was open-source, and a lot of different companies like IBM and some unversities worked on it, causing a lot of versions of UNIX to be out there.
Later on, in the 80's, Linus Torvalds (the Linus dude) fixxed the Unix kernel and called it Linux (or Linus Unix or something). Mac OS-X is also based off of Unix, actually. Just found the Wikipedia article, worth reading btw. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux |

Ohbtw, we're supposed to do an installation of Linux along with a webserver and stuff like that too this period. And once that's done, we're supposed to go write a kernel module (sorta like a driver for a device) in C.

In my own experience it was, though. I'm pretty sure that it was mainly because I had it installed on a removable hard drive of sorts.
The good thing about Linux is that it's highly versatile. Unlike Windows, you have a very large choice about what you do and what you don't want on it. Don't like the graphics? Change to a different window manager. Don't need all that flashy graphical stuff? Remove the graphical stuff entirely and go back to a console. It's highly modular and configurable. That's why it's mainly the more nerdy kind of people who like it - more stuff to fiddle around with. |

yea its from Sun Microsystems. all the hardware i use in college is from them also. ironicly Sun also does the whole Java thing, which happens what i'm learning at the moment. theres a nice feature i like is that everything i do is stored on servers instead of hardrives. i can sit anywhere in class and it doesnt matter what computer i use. just use my login name and password and thats it. all my info, media everything pops up.

Convenient. I've installed a few of those kinda systems as well, it's either a full CITRIX-like system where all you have is a small terminal computer and everything is calculated on a server, or all your drives are just network connections to your personal folder on the server.

I use Ubuntu alot, unfortunately Wine kinda sucks on it, but games that run natively on Ubuntu run really well.
I love Ubuntu's ease of use. Ive never used any other Linux, but I was right at home with Ubuntu.
