After many many weeks of begging and cleaning and just being a suckup, my father has agreed to let me pick a video game from Amazon to buy. I had my heart set on FFVII but it runs for $75, so that's out. I'm now considering FFVIII, but I don't want to buy anything that won't work on my PS2. I've heard that certain games don't work, and I was wondering if anyone knew for sure that FFVIII is one of them.

I hope this is helpful:
The PlayStation 2 is backwards compatible, the only games that will not work are ones that have different region codes. America and Japan at on the same NTSC codes whereas Europe and Australia/New Zealand areas are still using the PAL codes. It's only the difference for those video formats. Overall those issues can be solved by having a custom chip / mod chip installed to read different region codes. Otherwise if you check/ask any sellers where the game is coming from or where the game was originally bought from then you'll get the region information with it. If I had known your location I could have listed which region codes could be played on the Sony PlayStation consoles specifically for your Country's Region - it can be seen as somewhat the same as DVD Region Codes although slightly different, but only but a small difference. The PlayStation 3 on the other hand has backwards compatibility issues due to parts shortages and caused an issue in the Australian release of the console/system due to recalls to scrap the majority of the consoles down to parts for America and so we only received a few hundred "Special" (larger memory, reads Blu-Ray and apparently has better backwards-compatibility with some games than the "Normal") versions so there have been a lot of complaints about SquareSoft/Square-Enix games not working properly on that console. BUT if you owned a PlayStation Portable (Original/"Phat" or 2000-Series/Slim & Lite) you could have always gotten a PC Version of either game and set up an Emulating Program to play them with the PSP and PC together. Or if Square-Enix ever re-release or Port the games to other systems or perhaps the PSP (like they have done with Valkyrie Profile and others) then you could buy it from anywhere and expect them to work as all UMD (Universal Media Disc) games are region free so you don't have to do all of this researching crap. Overall, the above is all legal not to use any sort of pirated games/software of any SquareSoft/Square-Enix products and/or overall releases as SQEX crackdown strongly on the like and knowing staff there and at EA Games I do not support pirating of their products. I know about this stuff as when I was younger, my father took apart our first PlayStation (also known as the PSX and the second release of the PlayStation as PSOne) and I have had to stop him from taking apart the PS2 recently to the side of taking apart my PSP to repair it. Any other questions?
