Hello.
I have a laptop with an intel GM965 chipset, a Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family graphics adepter, and a conexant 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller soundcard. Unfortunately I hear no sound effects in game. I could hear the train sound (I mean the sound when the train moves when you're inside it), but that's it. No sound at all. No menu sounds, walking, fighting, drawing, spells...nothing at all. MIDI music and the world map music plays just fine, nothing else. I even tried updating to v1.2 but it didn't work. Can anyone help me please? Thanks very much in advance. |

Did you install the game patch that was released shortly after the game was, to help solve this problem?
If you haven't got it, then it could easily be the cause of it.

I don't know which one you mean or whether there are more patches, but the one I installed was called "ff8sqeapatch", and I patched it correctly IMO (I had to copy the EXE file into another directory and patch it there in order for the patch to modify the exe successfully)

P-Porn!? Whaaat? Maybe, if it is a ROM, it's a bad dump? Try getting another one, remember you have to own the game - sorry, had to add that >.> |

It could also be what Terra has suggested, but there is also the possibility that a section of files/data that are specific to the games' sound effects was corrupted in the installation (unless you're emulating it from a PSOne Disc, then it would be an issue with the emulator) and if they were found to be corrupted... then I would suggest what Terra has - as long as you own the game, have a look online and find a good downloadable copy to try and replace any files that are possibly broken (which was another issue, this apparently happens frequently on Vista, and has occasionally happened with older OS).

Thanks for all your replies, fellas
Sar, I assure you, sound is 100% on, both Wave and Midi. How else could I have heard the train sound? It's definitely not midi. I even tried running winamp together with FF8 just to see if the game doesn't mute te wave channel, but the music plays just fine, and besize that I can hear e.g. my antivirus alerts. So no, the sound isn't muted. I tried downloading a copy, but to no avail, no sound ![]() Last edited by etiainen : 01-20-2009 at 07:43 PM. |

Sar: GAAAAH!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() NO HEADPHONES CONNECTED! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Seriously...EdgarAnTerraFigaro: Nope, it's a PC version, no ROM. I tried downloading several different PC versions of the game from torrent, but still the problemm prevails. So yes, it's definitely the laptop's soundcard's problem... |

etiainen: I'm still looking for the other patches for you (as it solved the problem with my first laptop that wouldn't play any sound except for VIII!), just there is a LOT of boxes in my basement to work through, just wondering but what OS are you running?
Majority of new and old sound cards are generally compatible, but like I've said before some OS don't exactly get along with VIII... ranging from sound issues, freezing, not letting you go past sections of the games, chunks missing out of the world map, render issues... etc And have tried download an additional audio controller that is older and possibly more compatible with the game?

Finally, I took my PC apart, found my sound card, snapped it in half and went to my office. Once there, I built a home made sound card in the labs there. Took six days since I only got there at night, but now it works with FFVIII and other games too ^^ Try your sound card. |
