From the evidence in the game itself it's pretty obvious to me that Jenova was manipulating evidence around Sephiroth to lead him to the conclusion that she was his mother, and thus enabling him to be set off on the path of narcissism, pyromania, and omnicide which he so famously set out upon at Nibelheim. So even if he THINKS he's in control of his actions, it just so happens that his actions serve the purposes of Jenova just perfectly. Coincidence? I think not.

Oh, the ironic part is that I agree. There's a ****load of evidence to support that in the game and I myself thought the same until I heard about the Ultimania guide. The guide pretty much contradicts everything in the game but it's offiical canon and I hate to concede to it I find I can't really do otherwise. It's also offiically crappy. XD
