Apparently filming for the new film begins this summer in time for a 2008 Xmas release:
Paramount Pictures has officially announced J.J. Abrams as the director of the next Star Trek feature film. The news was first reported Friday. The film, which was not referred to as Star Trek XI, will shoot this fall for a Christmas Day 2008 release.
Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (the Abrams-directed Mission Impossible III) penned the screenplay and will executive produce with Bryan Burk. Abrams and his fellow Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof will produce.
"If there's something I'm dying to see, it's the brilliance and optimism of [Trek creator] Roddenberry's world brought back to the big screen," said Abrams. "Alex and Bob wrote an amazing script that embraces and respects Trek canon, but charts its own course. Our goal is to make a picture for everyone -- life-long fans and the uninitiated. Needless to say, I am honored and excited to be part of this next chapter of Star Trek."
