I think that more closely resembles the Sphere Grid than the Materia System. I didn't like the Materia system for one reason: your materia depended on your weapons and armor. While this can be an interresting way of managing the power of weapons, to me Materia should be based more on the abilities of the user.
The Sphere Grid is my favorite system. In the beginning you're sort of locked into each character's area of strength. Later on though, the entire grid becomes your playground, and all that the weapons do is make what you do on the Sphere Grid more real. For example, a +10% Attack is based on how high your character's attack score is at the time. Break abilities eliminate the max barrier and your character's HP, MP and damage are all based on what they really are in the grid.
The Draw/Junction system was interresting. I actually liked the Junction part of the system, it was just the Draw ethic that seemed a bit awkward.
