I think Ifrit is one of the more lacklustre summons, his best incarnation being in FFX. You get him early on in the games, so it's due fact that he's one of the weakest.

Renowned King of Dragons, non-elemental, wings to die for, and has kept a consistency of awesomeness throughout.

I like Doomtrain, often using him to kick off a battle despite the poor damage (before switching to the token Limit Break / I-have-high-stats-so-I-can-afford-to-remain-low-on-health strategy).
