After I found out about the movie about six months before it came out, I shook in excitement for it. It had beautiful landscapes and scenery, familiar characters in stunning detail, and the return of Sephiroth. I was expecting a plot to move me emotionally like every other Final Fantasy.

When it came out, it became apparant about thirty minutes into the movie that all it was was fighting. I was watching a movie with a plot that was forgotten over the long action sequences and probably would have had me turning it off if it wasn't for me liking Final Fantasy VII.

I can tell by the music and the actions in the last scene with a very short monologue from Cloud that it was supposed to be dramatic, but it was laughably pathetic. What Cloud said had nothing to do with his self-conflict in the film. And a bunch of people are being Baptized to cure some disease that wasn't explained all too well in a way that I didn't understand it untill I watched it again.

At the end of the credits I see "Director Tetsuya Nomura" and I say, "Oh crap. The KINGDOM HEARTS director did this? No wonder it sucked."

You were obviously overhyped with high expectations to what the film would deliver, as clearly a film will not be able to carry as much content, or build up the characters/evolve them in the way a 50+ hour game could - even if only 40% of that is story content). The math is rather simple. Over 20 hours of development compared to less than 2. No matter how good the development in the movie was, it would not have matched up to the game because of the gradual transitioning available to a stretched out game compared to a short film. Then again, sometimes the impact is lost when you stretch out a game too much, and the essence can be retained from a short movie from constant reminder within a short time span. Both are different story-telling devices, and you cannot expect them to have the same effect.

True, the film is different from other commercial films because it was created with the FF7 fans in mind - hence giving a good deal of fan-service, but at the same time trying not to deviate so much from the telling of a story. Its execution would be something like pseudo-anime style, and its definitely not all fighting, nor really about some baptism. It does focus on Cloud's inner conflict. If you missed it, you should watch it again - but its very obvious.

Anyway, if knowing just the background of the director is enough to justify to you that the film sucked, then seriously, thats very much a shallow and immature approach to the entire issue. The Director may call the shots, but theres alot more to the success of a movie (or game for that matter) than the execution of the story, script, visuals, etc. Not everything is done by Nomura alone, and even the marketing team and the continuity directors (in the case of this compilation) need to play their important roles in building up the success of the movie.

You may be entitled to your opinion, but it doesn't mean other's cant be critical of it when its baseless, immature and irrational.
