It's another good thing about FFX, which isn't emphasised. "Affection levels".

Basically, it means making them top priority. Healing and protecting the character in battle, conversing with them, opting for particular things and generally how you would go about doing things in real life in regards to getting [on] with people.

The following link should provide you with the relevant info, rather than me writing it all out :P GameFAQs: Final Fantasy X (PS2) Affection Levels FAQ by CB!

lol Once you realise, you'll probably look back and say "duh". In my game, Rikku was the first to jump off the airship when fighting Sin (I can't imagine Lulu diving headfirst into battle...well, I can XD). I don't think I even chose pro-Rikku options during the course of the game. It's probably because she is a regular in my battle line-up, so I get the chance to cure and cast buffs on her.

A little tip would be to get Tidus to [Cover/Sentinel] a member/girl while they are in critical health. This way, you will be "protecting" the character. Also, I think if Tidus hits them himself, their affection level towards you will decrease, naturally. In addition, you'll find that those less-hyped over you tend to remain silent during battle.
