Ah, Fireworks can be bit of a pain.
Just remember that generally Fireworks comes with another program called "Adobe Illustrator" which you can perform the normal Photoshop effects in for wallpapers (I used to draw little decorations in it and Fireworks to import into Photoshop).
If all else fails, then you can always try the free program called "The GIMP" - especially if Fireworks is slightly confusing (Photoshop is fairly easy, if you need any help with it, I am happy to help).
