Basically, your idea of it's gameplay is incorrect due to the factor of some objects within the areas / battle areas themselves are 3D and destroyable. 2D Is generally the ideals of cartoon styling and 3D is generally the ideals of realism so it is a combination game basically.

Actually, it refers to 2D fighting, being 2D pane with side on screen, and 3D being full 3D camera. So they mean it is a mixture of both that makes it look awesome. So there are instance of both side on and full 3D camera angles.
