I can explain my reasoning if you wish, but to be brief:
XII was a disappointment: lack of interesting/unique villains contributed to this (judges were all the same, Vayne was bland, etc.); really Dr. Cid is the only one remotely worthy of praise.
XI was a disappointment: MMO, need I say more?
X-2 was a failure: beyond the return to a classic battle system it sucked majorly. The antagonists were particularly uninspired.
X was well done: it had villains whom you could actually remember and connect with.
Oh, and I'm revising my statement. Yu Yevon was fine as the umbrella antagonist, but my favorite, for many reasons including character, symbolism, placement, appearance, etc, is Yunalesca. That entire Zanarkand arc was probably the most relevant to the plot and the most tastefully done, imo...
