Seven Samurai (1954). Directed by the infamous director Akira Kurosawa, it's a truly classic film that is widely regarded as one of the best films of all time. It's directing and editing are excellent, and it has a great ensemble of characters. The film takes you to early 16th century Japan, where a peasant village tries and eventually succeeds in persuading seven samurai to help defend the village from the wild and dangerous bandits that intend to raid. This film has a gritty realism that takes no prisoners, a definite "must-see".
Snatch (2000). Directed by Guy Ritchie, this film is a gritty comedy set in modern day London, whereTurkish and his companion Tommy hope to make some money through unlicensed boxing. As they endeavor to do so, they are affected by a chain of events taking place around them that began with the theft of a very valuable 86 carat diamond. This film is a good laugh, with a diverse range of vastly different characters.
