personally i would go with sabin for his blitzes, celes as she can equip the elemental weapons and absorb magic, umaro because he is insanely strong, and gau because of the rage command

I would go with Edgar, Terra, Celes, and Locke.
Edgar was good with everything, while he completely matched his strengths
with Locke, who could be a big help. While Terra could kick ass with Magic
and swords, Celes did the same, but with less damage.
This is and was my best team and always will be.
Besides, the other teams mates were cool, but not good in battle....

Edgar: Varying attacks of power and targeting capabilities. [Slot 2]
Sabin: Bum Rush is awsome, and uber high attack. [Possible Slot 4]
Shadow: High attack. Uber Ninja. Great Dog. [Possible Slot 4]
Cyan: Too much time to charge attacks.
Gau: A lot of powerful attacks, but no controlling which ones are used, but powerful attacks. [Slot 1]
Celes: High magic, but low attack and defense.
Setzer: Based on chance. Load of crap.
Mog: It takes too much time to learn all the dances.
Strago: Must get hit in order to learn sstrong attacks. Will most likely die in the process.
Relm: The only way to use powerful attacks is to go up against powerful foes.
Umaro: Brute strength. Can't control him, but he slaughters everyone. [Slot 3]
Gogo: Can't attack first.

Careful with the multicolored type faces, kinda hard to read.
Also you are wrong on alot of your descriptions. Celes can have some of the best non Mog defense in the game if equiped and leveled right, also pretty much has some of the highest attack for a mage anyway.
Mog has some of the best Defence in the game, even though he's pretty mediocre on physical and magical damage, but his dances are much easier to find then Strago's Lores.
Also Strago doesn't need to be hit to learn his Blue Magic, he just needs to be able to see it, I.E. not be blinded or KO'd.
I heard Relm can be Lethal with Magic, I havn't seen it myself but others say it's true.
For me GoGo was pretty usefull once I discovered he can use more than just the mimic ability.
Cyan is one of my best Physical attackers, have him use normal attacks, or when the other characters are charging their attacks, see if you can get a good bushido move in without wasting time.
Setzer is most certainly not based on chance! He has *Fixed Dice* which are lethal, and if you don't like his slot ability, make him throw Gil instead.

Rant based on the GBA version

Relm has the highest base magic stat in the game. However she can't dual wield enhancers and llghtbringers. She's the best choice to equip a merit award on, so she can use swords like Celes and Terra.

Terra edges out over Celes by one magic attack point and the Transform ability. She gets the Soul of Thamasa (Gem Box in earlier versions) to dual cast. Along with Genji Gloves to dual wield lightbringers or enhancers.Terra and Celes edge out in defensive capabilities over all male characters and Relm since the Minerva Bustier is exclusive to them. Celes gets the second Soul of Thamasa from the secret dungeon. The exceptions being Mog and Shadow.

Shadow has the highest physical evade and the highest magic evade in the game. A party including Mog and Shadow is hard to kill.

As for Mog? Mog is potentially the strongest character. Why? The Snow Scarf. The Snow Scarf alone gives him 247 defense (255 defense is the max, meaning enemies deal only one damage to you). Give him a ribbon, the paladin shield and stick him in the back row with dragon boots equipped. He's the key to killing the Kaiser Dragon in the GBA version. With the fourth highest base magic stat in the game and a decent physical attack score he can make the best use out of the spear that randomly casts Holy (Radiant Spear?) In Final Fantasy III, IV, V, and VI jump can be used from the back row and not get penalized for damage.

Setzer can be broken as well. His weapon from Kefka's tower (Fixed Dice) does random damage. In the secret dungeon in the GBA version there's an extra one, pair this with a Master Scroll and Genji Gloves and you increase your chances to do eight hits for up to 9999 damage each. The Master Scroll won't decrease his random damage since it's independent of his physical attack stat.

Gau with the Stray Cat rage can deal 5k+ damage per attack.

Cyan with his fully charged wind elemental Bushido attack can do basically the same thing as the Setzer strategy except it takes longer and the damge is steadier.

Sabin's Blitzes are based on his magic attack not his physical attack. I never liked entering buttons to get off his Phantom Rush attack.

Locke in the endgame is just needed to steal a Ragnarok off the third phase of the Kefka fight.

Umaro has the second highest defense in the game. His problem is he's uncontrollable and can't use espers to increase his other stats.

Gogo is great to fill in spots in the final three dungeons.

Edgar is average except when you're grinding experience or cash on the world map, since he has two hit-all attacks. There's just nothing game breaking about him.

And Strago? He has Mighty Guard.

My parties as followed.

The A-Team for single party encounters and dungeons:

Relm, Celes, Terra, Mog. All in the back row, since they're all primarily casters.

Multiple party dungeons:

Relm, Mog, Cyan, Locke

Celes, Shadow, Gau, Strago

Terra, Edgar, Setzer, Gogo (equipped with steal)

The quick way to make anyone overpowered is teach them Ultima. Quick, and Temper.

You forget that Gau can also equip the Snowscarf. Umaro as well, has it permanetly equiped. I had Gau use the Tyrannosaur rage, and he can easily do 9999.

I had it the other way around with Mog and Edgar, I essentially made Mog a defensive mage, as my third party out was always in need of one, plus magic boosting aids his dances. Another issue was the "ultimate weapons" of Edgar and Mog, they were spears, but they never added any spear bonuses to the jump command, Gungnir helped mog out magically more than Longinus helped edgar out physically. So I equiped Edgar with the Radiant Lance and gave him the role of "Ultimate Dragoon." Dragon Horn plus Dragoon boots= 4 x jump, plus tools were always a handy offensive skill.
Another reason was that I couldn't imagine for the hell of it how a moogle could be a dragoon! xD

Cyan saved my ass back when I was taking on Omega weapon. If you cast quick on him, time stops, and he can pull off his tempest move twice with no interuptions, plus I was in a pickle, his sword was elemental so it did terrible damage if I used his x attack strategy, tempest is non elemental and ignores defence.
