I generally take Terra and Celes because they both have fantastic magic abilities and can wield all the best weapons in the game. Those are the two main constants, but other than that the most common two are Locke, because Steal is one of my favourite abilities and the game, and Edgar, because Tools are great justice.

I bring in the ladies for the same reason as Man said--they have awesome magic power, particularly Terra and neither does badly with a sword. I tend to love Edgar's tools ability. I also really like Cyan as a character even though I think his skill sucks. It's a pretty balanced party actually.

Mog
It's just fun to play as a Moogle. He's got DDR skillz to boot. Shadow He can throw stuff. Plus he's a ninja with a counterattacking dog. One time a friend of mine threw a Healing Rod at a low-HP Cayenne and killed him. Funny. Celes It's good to have someone fluent with magic. Runic is pretty handy once in a while. Edgar His Tools command is handy, especially those non-elemental attacks.

I dont really have a usual party, but a lot of the time i end up using:
Sabin: for his blitzes, mostly bum rush Edgar: That chainsaw of his works wonders Gogo: cuz he takes everyone elses moves ^_^ and the last one usually varies between Celes, Setzer or Cyan |

Celes and Terra, because they're both very powerful mages, and imo magic is one of the most important abilities in and FF game.
Edgar because he's fairly strong and he always ends up equipped with a lance/spear/whatever you wanna call it, and Dragoons are my all time favourite class. and Sabin because he's extremely strong, and his latter Blitzes are hard to pull off, and I like a challenge |

Best Offense: Terra, Sabin, Shadow, Mog.
Best Magic Users: Terra, Celes, Setzer, Edgar. Best Skills Team: Shadow, Sabin, Gau, Edgar. In general I had Terra in my party 99% of the time because I thought she was very strong. Below her was Sabin because at that age I had a crush on him (lol) and I thought his moves were awesome. Followed by Mog - he's adorable and his dances are powerful. And finally, Relm - she's a bit weak but her paintings are rather powerful.

The huge degree of variety in FFVI's team set-up is quite easily one of the best qualites of the game, and definately makes it one of the tactically strongest in the series.
My personal line up? Relm - for control and high magic stats Shadow - super powerful special attacks Celes - attacking and healing Locke - Good strenght and stealing ability. Though, as a general rule, I liked to chop and change my characters out constantly to keep them equally leveled, just to satisfy the completist in my, but those few were my top favourites when it came to serious, stategic battles.

I have the tendancy to throw in Mog from time to time because he's got the Moogle charm that elimiinates those annoying encounters, he's got that awesome Snow Muffler which makes in near invulnerable and he's just so darn cute. <3

The characters which I used throughout of FFVI consisted of:
Sabin: Did large amounts of damage with his blitzs attacks, also saved my life many times in tight situation. Cyan: Awesome Sword techs, they also saved my life many times. Celes: I recall her being able to absorb magic damage or something like that? it's been too long to remember but the unique ability to her was very useful, she was an excellent asset to the team. Shadow: Although throughout most of the game you never really 'got' him in your party untill the end he proved most useful throughout all the times you got him. His throwing techniques did large amounts of damage and thus allowing you to defeat your enemy with ease.

Altho i Luv em all, and think almsot all of them have valued, albight atleast fun abilities, i have always had a main group as follows; Terra, Lock, Celes, Cyan. Terra and celes make excellent magic users, and later on, with the minerva breastplate equiped, are good on the defense too. I have Alzheimers so i can really only reminise about my current teams strategy and equipment. Terra, is givin a celestriad and the soul of thamasa, and is used as a prime duel caster for offensive spells like ultima, or better yet, ultima, quick, ultima, ultima, ultima, ultima, for 9999 a piece! :O Celes, is my back up mage, who has a celestriad and a various other accessory, who either heals or backs up offensive magic or even makes a good physical atacker, and has been givin the palidens shield for ultra Def, the way her stats are, and her equipment, she could Solo Kefka, heheheh. Cyan, is my main attacker, and has teh Masters scroll, Now any other strong physical attacker could do just as well with it, but Samurais are Bad Ass, and having him Pwn with his Gauntlet increasing Zanmato, has him cutting the enemy apart like that. Hes also a balenced asset who can apply items when nessesary pr use light magic, Plus His Dragon Abilitie really helps. Finnally, i have lock as my Fast, Ninja esc back up fighter, with duel weps, using genji gloves, and sometimes being givin dual ultima weapons, for tough bosses, hes also a Hard hitter, plus he loves teh ladies, i couldnt seperate him from Celes, also steal, hehehe or treasure hunting whtever he calles it.
. Anyway when all together they could take on Ultima wep in a couple of rounds :O. Best GBA game Eva!

Strago: Amazing magic skills and his blue magic
Cyan: His Sword Tech is just lethal Gau: His Rage is pretty cool, but it can be a really big gamble Gogo: He's Mr. Versatile and can do any tech that I want |

Sabin: He's a tank when it comes to physical attacks, and he makes a good magic subsitute when (my) Terra or Celes are temporarily down for the count.
Terra: She has the best offensive/defensive magic stats around, or so I think. Her ability to turn Esper can be an absolute saviour at times. Celes: She's like Terra, but without the Esper ability. She also does some decent damage with a sword if leveled up right. Cyan: His sword techniques take forever to work, but what he lacks in speed he makes up for in strength. He's quite a powerhouse when equipped with two swords. |

Up's and Down's:
Terra: High magic, moderately high offense/defense, and esper mode is kickass. [Possible Slot 4] Locke: Steal is useful, especially to get Genji Gloves, and with Sneak Ring and Thief gloves, he is amazing! [Possible Slot 4] Edgar: Varying attacks of power and targeting capabilities. [Slot 2] Sabin: Bum Rush is awsome, and uber high attack. [Possible Slot 4] Shadow: High attack. Uber Ninja. Great Dog. [Possible Slot 4] Cyan: Too much time to charge attacks. Gau: A lot of powerful attacks, but no controlling which ones are used, but powerful attacks. [Slot 1] Celes: High magic, but low attack and defense. Setzer: Based on chance. Load of crap. Mog: It takes too much time to learn all the dances. Strago: Must get hit in order to learn sstrong attacks. Will most likely die in the process. Relm: The only way to use powerful attacks is to go up against powerful foes. Umaro: Brute strength. Can't control him, but he slaughters everyone. [Slot 3] Gogo: Can't attack first.
