Default Final Fantasy II levelling system

Did you enjoy it? or should they have just used the regular levelling system instead?

Personally I thought it was a bit boring. Towards the end of the game especially because you had to spend so long using the corresponding actions to get your stats to raise by just one point. I would have much preferred a regular levelling system that doesn't take up so much time.
Maybe when they do the PSP remake they should include the option to play it with a regular levelling system.

I agree, the levling system was annoying, tedious and tireing... they should have left the origional levling system or come up with a better one.

I can't say I ever enjoyed it. It was rather dull. And yes very tedious. I think the part that annoyed me the most was that it was so very simplistic and long.

i think SE did try to fix the broken lvl up system in the remakes..

but if you want to level up you really need to focus on whatever it is you're skilling up. dungeon crawl fights are pointless because of this.. but SE put in those random HP and MP boosts for it..

it doesn't take too long if you continually cast magic-all on your own party

I was nieve! i wasnt fully aware of the mechanations of the leveling system. and ended up getting 3-4 Fighters > they all sucked at magic, and i had to use healing potions throughout the game, and in the end i couldnt beat it, cause i had a bunch of one trick ponies, without a blood sword ...... HATED the system

The system was not fun but easy as hell. Just beat the crap out of your party all the time and your HP will skyrise. You'll become invincible in no time. And the last boss will become easy as cake. (Even without that lousy Blood Sword)

Leveling up is easy if you know the cheat You just input an attack, or magic command and then cancel it. The game still registers it as you attacking an enemy, and thus your stats level up and to rise your hp you simply attack each other. I did this at the start of the game, and I more or less, breezed through the game! Though the system still was pretty weak

The levelling system wasn't great, but it wasn't awful either. No matter how ingenious it was for the time, it still couldn't save such a tedious and uninspiring plot.

looking back, having recently played Soul of Rebirth (which is still ff2) again.. FF2s battle system seems very much unbalanced, and is one of the last of its kind from Square/Square-Enix.. which would learn alot from the mistakes from this series entry...

Stat growth was very iffy.. as was weapon skill growth. To be powerful in the game, it didn't require any leveling, but simply getting weapons and armor 'beyond' your current position in the game. This was easy if you could kill monsters much stronger than you... and that was even more easy if you took time to train up on an instant kill spell. Toad, Teleport, Warp, Death, etc.. there were so many of them (I liked Teleport best)... and many bosses were actually vulnerable to them too.. which made it seem rather strange.

Many spells were useless.. and weren't ever worth leveling up.. but others were so powerful.... Ultima was a useless spell compared to Berserk, Haste and possibly Aura. This is cos those spells increase your attack rating by so much (especially berserk that increases attack) that each hit you do can go well beyond what a single casting of Ultima could. This is especially cos they stack.

When forced to fight things far more powerful than you (bosses), you could easily exploit this system by buffing 1 guy and putting him on the front line, whilst the rest were relegated to casting and keeping him alive..
It was an inbalanced system but rather fun if you could get on the better side of it...

That said, I hope no more games are made in a system even remotely similar to this... with the flawed stat mechanics, even enemies way weaker than you always get to attack first... and its annoying when nearly every single battle you have is either Pre-emptive strike on far weaker monsters, or attacked first by everythign else
