Dissidia: Final Fantasy character of choice!

I've always thought of Terra as the real main character, seeing it as it starts around her, and that she is the most important/special character in the game. Celes doesn't come along until after a while..

Alright, in V we're already gonna see Exdeath in it so I'm not going to waste anyone's time with that. Now I think Gilgamesh will be the hero for that and let me tell you why.

Gilgamesh has had many instances where he starts out on the wrong path and redeems himself in the end (including his introductory game, FF5. There is an exception in FF12, buuuuut I won't go into that). Moreover, I believe their are a lot of honorable intentions in his actions, and so it is only logical that he would be capable of being a[n] [Anti-]hero.

Now, FF6 - wise, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Setzer. Sure his character may not have been as colorful as some of the others, but he's the only one I can really think of that would haul ass without brute force or magic or espers, but merely his wits, his cards, and his dice!

Ugh, it may be fruitless to say this, but I REALLY HOPE THEY DON'T INCLUDE CLOUD STRIFE!!! God, did anyone else but me find Cloud's character a bit overly emotional and all out pessimistic?

And in Crisis Core, it's even worse! He ends up doing nothing but groaning, sleeping or wounded throughout the entire game!

an93al_fanatix13, you were right and you were wrong. exdeath is in, but gilgy was never going to be considered the main hero. In the very unlikely chance they included secret characters, he would have been at the top of the list.

I have known since they revealed Tidus that it would be main character and main villain for each installment. That's the only way to create a proper FF tribute while doing each game justice. That being said, anyone who thinks that Terra and Cloud will not be the choices for VI and VII should wake up to reality. I agree that both games had a large variety of interesting characters with unique fighting styles to choose from, but none of them represent their game better than the main character.

That being said, in the highly unlikely chance that they will include secret characters, I'd put best odds on:

FF1: is there anyone else?
FF2: Leon or Maria (dark character or strong female lead in love with hero)
FF3: Xande (other main villain--Refia-modelled OK wouldn't be very original)
FF4: Kain or Zeromous (dark character or other main villain) (Rydia would be third but I limit to two most likely)
FF5: Gilgamesh (too much of a toss-up between the other four party members)
FF6: Locke or Celes (Second main character or hero archetype and the strong female lead in love with hero)
FF7: Tifa or Vincent (dark character WITH SPINOFF or strong female lead in love with hero)
FF8: Seifer or Rinoa (dark character WITH PSEUDO-SPINOFF or strong female lead in love with hero)
FF9: Vivi or Dagger/Garnet (dark character or strong female lead in love with hero)
FF10: Seymour or Yuna (other main villain or strong female character in love with hero WITH SPINOFF) (auron would be third but having a sword costs him)

As you can see, nearly all of these characters have multiple things going on for them that other characters simply don't have. They are either strong female characters that would provide interesting interplay with the main hero, main villains who would provide interesting interplay with the main villain, or are sufficiently confused and brooding to at least provide something interesting. And nearly all of them have the potential for very unique movesets. This is partly why I wouldn't mind sticking a few of the heroes' girlfriends in as secret characters. In those alone we could find enough opportunity for plot development while adding a monk, a gunner, or even a pinwheel boomerang thingy.

With that said, while there is definitely potential for each game to get a third rep, I am quite confident this will not be the case, for two reasons:

1) The developers are rushed as usual. Twenty characters is a lot for a first game, and they each have transformations--that takes a lot of time. Months ago there was info floating around about each character having four transformations that you could level up. If that ever was planned, it definitely has been dropped in favor of just finishing the game. Secret characters seem to be something that they would have dropped even before alternate transformations.

2) They are smart. They aren't going to include extra characters unless they can justify slighting all of the other candidates. Include Zack, and people bitch about not having Vincent. Include Vincent, people bitch about not having Tifa. Include Tifa, people bitch about not having Rydia, etc. etc. They will never please everyone. In order to please mostly everyone, they set the guidelines: 1 main hero, 1 villain. The fact that it adds up to twenty gives them reason not to go over that symbolic number. No one has a right to be disappointed with such an arbitrary decision. This also leaves plenty of characters to choose from if there's ever a sequel...

So, in conclusion, although I have some characters I would like to be in Dissidia, I will be content with what is obviously a well-organized montage to the franchise, and wait for the next installment to hope for a little more variety.

Then why wasn't Cloud released WITH Sephy? I think Square Enix has something big planned...

Ummm...he just was. And to answer your question, either they wanted to confuse people who thought it might be Zack, or more likely, they knew everyone knew it would be cloud but wanted to keep people guessing as to how he would look. Although it was pretty obvious what he would look like given the appearances of the other characters.

And I revise my statement concerning extra characters. Those are the most likely to be chosen for additions to the sequel. If there are any chances of secret characters in this one, it will be much more limited. The chances have increased since they have seemingly revealed everything with still two months of hype to keep up. With that, I say that either they will add Lightning and Noctis to increase hype for FFXIII (which though probable is still highly unlikely for many reasons), or more likely Cosmos and Chaos will be playable. Frankly, I would be happy if the only two secret characters were those, as they have potential for creative movesets. Again, this is unlikely, but it seems the most appropriate way to approach secret characters in this game.

Yes, and fanatix had posted that the day of or after cloud pics surfaced. So I corrected him. And even in August, it was pretty apparent who all the characters would be; that was just wishful thinking on his part.

Oh and in case anyone else reads this thread and thinks that I still think what I thought a month and a half ago, I have revised my position yet again and am now hoping for a character creator mode (unlikely as it is) instead of including specific characters. That way everyone's happy.

I can deduce now that this thread is essentially worthless.
But, on a side note, I may want to clear up a little theory about the character choices.
It seems to loosely revolve around not just the "Main character" vs. "Main antagonist" but rather the FIRST character you play as vs the LAST boss you fight against (Pending Kuja and Golbez and Gabranth and Shantotto and Garland)

I: Warrior of Light, starts out as a warrior in the game.
II: Firion, nuff said, male lead.
III: Onion Knight, first job you start out as.
IV: Dark Knight Cecil, first playable character
V: Bartz, first playable character
VI: Terra, first playable character
VII: Cloud, first playable character,
VIII: Squall first playable character
... ETC. you get the idea.
