I have to go with VI on this one simply for the Aria di Mezzo Carattere, with VII coming second for One Winged Angel.
I rate VI over VII because it had more original and memorable songs though VII had some good ones too.

I kinda enjoyed the FFVII: AC. Not sure, it was more heavy then the rest and matches perfect with my predominant genre of music. One Winged Angel was an example that greater beings wrote that piece.

My favourite was the FFVII soundtrack. It was a great OST and had quite a few memorable tracks compared to the other FF OSTs. Most of the others were very good, but nothing in comparison to FFVII.:P

I really like all of Nobou Uematsu's music. My favorite Soundtrack would be Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

I'd think FFVIII's OST was the best, because of all the OSTs from FF, VIIIs was the most connected, most focused. The tracks seemed to follow a theme or a mood. None of them felt out of place... That's also why it's my favourite OST..
I'd say FFIX isn't bad because its got great tracks, but as a collective, the music is all over the place - but this was intended because FFIX was paying homage to the entire series at the same time.
VI is also another good one, but only if it was redone with a better synthesizer or orchestra

I never used to like the soundtrack of FFVIII, but lately I was forced to reconsider. I thought that maybe it was because the game appeared to be based in more modern times, rather than medieval (IX) or futuristic (X). However, I can appreciate some of the tracks themselves today.
I'll say 9 and 10 do have the better soundtrack since they are more likeable overall, although I praise Man With The Machine Gun as being one of the best pieces of VG music ever made. 8's is decent but not outstanding. In fact, some of the music makes me want to get out of an area triple-time lol.
I've yet to hear XII's. But I have heard some of VI...and the battle themes sound pretty boss.
My ears are always open, though...
From what I know, I'll nominate Final Fantasy X as having the Best Soundtrack - I can only describe it as "quality".

FVII has to be my pick. Seto the Warrior's theme I find is a great song and side story in the game. I wonder if they made a orchestral version?

Does anyone of you actually know the whole name of the FFVIII Soundtrack? Fabula nova blah bhlah **** something. No one can ever remember that name.
Anyway, FFIX and VII was the games with the best music in my opinion.
