I have always wondered what time periods each and every FF are in. I only have one clue that the FF's are all on Earth and in the future from FFX-2, (it was the only part of the game that got my real attention) when Yuna, Rikku, and Paine are listening to the scholor, Maechen in the Youth league headquarters. In this very long lecture Maechen mentions something about the Titanic. It would make it certain that it's in the future unlike Star Wars were it's futeristic but in the far past. We would have to come up wiht the idea that it's time period is about 25,000 years from now putting into account that they are on Earth and the length of time it would take a regular wolf to turn into something a little different.
I haven't really done to much looking into any of the other FF's but It would be interesting to know what time periods you think other FF's are in. Please if your going to post on this thread that you look a little bit into the FF's time period first. |

Hell, look at Star Trek... it takes place only several hundred YEARS in the future, not millenia, and while it may not be the most realistic example, it's far more realistic than expecting today's humans to not be extinct in another 25,000 years. |

anyway i could only imagne what life would look like 100 years from now. theres definatly going to be colonies on other planets. just a hundred years ago airplanes, man on the moon, communicating with people across the globe in a matter of seconds and other stuff like that was impossible and consideired science fiction.

Final Fantasy actually takes place mainly on a fictitious planet called Gaia, except in the instance of FFX, in which its Spira. Final Fantasy in essence is timeless, you can't really confine the games to specific time periods in the past/present/future. Its called Final Fantasy for a good reason.

You could look at it like a weird multiverse idea where they're all in technically in the present but due to various circumstances, they're in different moments in development so to speak. (How XII is sort of mid industrial revolution era while IX is a mix of medieval and some industrial.)

Well, FF7 Is on earth, Since (Yes, i know i made a topic about this sexy beast)
Sephiroths attack Supernova, goes through all the planets, and when it goes to earth, it goes back into the battle screen. So, Based on our time now, i'd say stuff like 'The Cetra' would be happening in around, 500 years, after some big nuke, or something. Haha. ;] I bet The Cetra are big FF Nerds. |

But the Cetra came before regular humans to settle the planet, and the 'Regular Humans' are Cetra who split off from the main group and formed their own communities, and eventually lost their powers. So the Cetra would have been far back in our past, not the future

Final Fantasy games are not tales of different time periods of this planet, but of different parallel dimensions. It's and Alternate reality, not a visible past or a foreseeable future.
Bump theory states that every decision we make creates thousands of new parallel universes in which we did something else. So fear not, FF fans, it's probable that all of the games could actually have happened. |

Final Fantasy isn't designed, or based on our own timeline and/or current events. FFVII does show the planets as we know them, however do you know anywhere called Nibelheim or Midgar on Earth?
Of course not. you can name a planet "Earth" but it doens't make it dependant on our own reality. Final Fantasy is timeless (as mentioned before). |

All Final Fantasy games take place in entirely different realities. Those within the same series number iteration follow the same world (like FFVII all take place on Gaia). It remains to be told how FFXIII will pan out.
The additional supernova animation was added to the US version of FF7 as was never part of the original FF7 (japan release). I guess the battle directors wanted to play around abit and did that. The animation of Supernova in FF7 is therefore not canon. There is also the underlying possibility that FFVII and FFXs worlds may exist in the same reality but on different worlds, although Nomura has clearly stated that it is an idea he wants gamers to have, but not accept it as a fact. Also possible to be linked is the world of Ivalice in tactics and FFXII... although I've not played Tactics so I don't know much |

In addition using the Supernova battle animation for proofz that FF7 is set on Earth isn't very good evidence anyway. Because if you want to take that animation literally as sson as Sephiroth uses the attack there isn't a sun or planet's left after you win the battle. Kind of silly evidence RLY, it realy just goes to show Sephiroth using some 'godlike' ability. |

Agr'd. It seems irrealistic that a world so utterly unlike our own would have anything relative to it.
