Default Dissidia site update

I have just discovered that the Dissidia site has been updated (just one business day out of my prediction; not bad...).

Updated characters with Bartz and ExDeath, along with another tutorial trailer. The new trailer is about summons, the only interesting thing to note is that 1) I was right that Terra is not the only person able to summon and 2) Carbuncle's art has changed, which either means they completely changed it recently and hadn't quite decided what it would look like when the famitsu issue came out, or that there is the smaller possibility of each summon having multiple artworks, maybe determined at random. Too early to tell, but I think the former is more likely.

Enjoy!

Thanx for the post! I like the idea that summons are used as supports rather than a means of attacking, which would make some fights very one-sided if that were the case.

While I agree, I don't think EdgaranTerraFigaro would be very happy about it...:P

I think Terra's moveset will still be original, however. They'll have something better in mind than summons, which would seem a very indirect way of fighting, imo. I'm just wondering exactly what...naturally she'll probably have some magic skills yet use that sword, but it looks like OK already has most of the black magics covered, so even specialization in fire attacks seems a little bit of a stretch but not unlikely. If they really wanted to be original, they could give her status-inducing magic, but that would be hard for them to justify...Terra is an unknown variable at this point and I am fine with that.

Well, I've never played FFVI so I am lost there. But I gotta agree with you that some of her skills will be with her sword and a combination of magic, but then that would give more of a reason to have Celes on there rather than Terra.

Ahhhh...but unlike Terra, Celes is not the main, as much as I and many others like her character, she does not have a really cool transformation, and her only special move, Runic, is seeming more and more redundant with every bit of info we receive about Bartz's mime abilities. Additionally, both Terra and Celes were magic-wielding swordswomen, so I can't see where one would be more preferable than the other based on that fact. If there is a sequel to this with more characters, I am certain Celes is near the top of the list of potential additions...

Probably won't see a sequel for another ten to twenty years.

Depends. Nintendo has turned out SSB every three to four years on average, yet they've still been releasing other projects left and right (Damn you, Wii Fit!). Personally, although I would like a sequel and am certain that if it sells enough SE will strongly consider one, there has been no word that this will be the beginning of an entirely new franchise for Square. And given the projects they already have planned and their timeliness, 10+ years is not that unrealistic of an assumption. Though if it will take them that long to get a sequel out, they might as well abandon the idea for continuity reasons.

Well, it is an aniversary special. And I presume that they would need a couple more titles ( maybe 11 through 20) to do a proper sequel. By then they might be ready, but like you said, it kind of defeats the point. Dissidia might be just one of those one off classics. Since it is downloadable though, their might be downloadable updates to the game, like additional gameplay features and characters.

Let's hope, because that seems to be the best way to keep the game alive yet make original additions to it. The problem with a sequel when another 10 games or so have come out is that they would need to add about 10 more pairs of heroes and villains. That would completely mess with the roster, because many fans will wonder where the original 20 went (there won't be a 40 character roster, I can tell you that much...), not to mention the lost opportunity for more of the supporting characters from the first ten installments. I agree with you that if they care to make any additional characters, they will be released for download; not in another game.

The only hitch I can think of is that eventuallly the PSP and the graphics of Dissidia will start to seem obsolete and they might still be releasing new content for it years from now. But this is easily remedied by the hope of a remake in another ten years so they can continue adding on with updated visuals!

Now see, this is what I don't get. Why just make Dissidea for the PSP only, when you could also make one for the PS3 or perhaps another v.g. console that would be perfect to play Wi-Fi or online? Sure there are some good portable fighting games out there, like Jump Superstars for the DS, but I just don't get why they would make such an epic game for the PSP only.

*As a side note, I do apologize if this opinion has been brought up before in a previous post and is making other people feel annoyed and/or a feeling of deja vu.

Actually, I have yet to see anyone make that comment, and I quite agree with you. I was also confused as to why a commemorative game would be released on a handheld system as well. I'm sure the thought they had was that the player could essentially whip out their PSP wherever they are and play anyone whenever they wanted, but doing so ultimately shaped the way the game was formed. It would have been nice to have more than two people face-offs; it would add more complexity to the game, but I think the fact that it is on PSP limited it to 2, even though four was conceivable. My only possible explanation for why not PS3 was because that system still has a doubtful future, and as they wanted this game to live on, they brought it to the PSP, which is in it for the long haul (which means more likelihood for downloadably additions as well!).

Actually, that's a really good idea. I believe a certain project revolved around that theme. Star Wars: the Force Unleashed, went super multi platform. I think they pretty much covered every current system. PS2, PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and DS. All the same game, but had an original feel to them. I liked the idea of this. I never so much thought of IV for the DS as an improvement upon the GBA version, but more the same game, made with a different approach. If they super Multi platformed Dissidia, i could not complain actually.

Translated character update for anyone who cares, courtesy of chaotic cosmos:

Story

A world blessed by four Crystals...
The people considered the Crystals' gifts to be simply a common part of their everyday lives. But then, one day the Wind Crystal shattered as all of its power had been used up. In the midst of his wandering travels, Bartz banded together with Princess Lenna on her quest to protect the remaining Crystals from the forces of evil. Along their journey, they discovered the truth behind the hidden mysteries of their world.

Bartz Klauser

A young man possessing a strong sense of justice and a gallant heart. This talented fighter utilizes a combination of techniques from his fellow Warriors of Cosmos in battle. On his world, as he was traveling together with his chocobo Boko to fulfill his father's dying wish, he unexpectedly came upon Princess Leena at the sight of a meteor crash, and decided to join her on her journey to save the Crystals.

Exdeath

An evil warlock who wields the all-consuming power of nothingness, referred to as "The Void." While he moves slowly, movement has no affect on how wide the range of his magic extends. On his world, he was bound to the four crystals and was revived when they shattered. He fought against both sets of Light Warriors to obtain the complete dominion over "The Void," only to be utterly consumed by the very power he sought.

Let me know if you want more; they have translations for the rest of the website as well...

Wow, cool update. LOL I expected the rest of the confirmed chars to be there too.

I don't quite understand the battle system, but Carbuncle and Iffrit seem to be useful power-ups. Are the rest of the classic summons gonna make an appearance too? (What's a final fantasy game without Bahamut?)

I already posted that in one of the earlier dissidia threads, but I'll just give you what we actually know, not my predictions. These have been confirmed so far...

Exodus (XII/TA/TA:2), Gilgamesh (VI, VIII, RW), Slydra (V), Choco/Mog (VII), Diabolos (VI, VIII, XI, RW), Tonberry (VII:CC, VIII, RW), Knights of the Round (VII), Bahamut (III-X, RW, T), Brothers (VIII), and Maduin (VI)

Note the conspicuous absence of many classic FF summons that people would kill if they weren't in the game...Shiva, Ramuh, Leviathan, Phoenix, Alexander, Fenrir, Titan, etc. Methinks there will be many more to come...

I don't want to watch the new video as I have low internet allowance per month, and I would rather see it for myself when I buy the game and play it.

But do summons only appear as artwork or as 3d models like the characters?

Only artwork. Ifrit appears as his FF 5 artwork and Carbuncle as its FF 8 artwork, although in the famitsu article Carbuncle was in its FF 11 artwork...suspicious...:P
