I personally don't, I like to see a continuation of a story in game. For such an example of this can be seen in FFVII. Once you have reached disk 4 there is no turning back, you have to stay in the castle (I've forgotten the name of it) but yes I know you can go to the outside world but everything is blocked off.
What do you people think? do you enjoy able to continue in the normal world or would you prefer to just stay in the last area and not return?

I for one cant stand it. It's a pain in the ass when you can't go back and do a bunch of leveling up or exploration. I really like dragging out the end so I get the most of the game.

I also can't stand it. I like to be able to go around, get every last bit of information I can out of NPCs, find any stuff I might have missed whilst playing through, and finish any sidequests etc. that I might have missed.
Ultimecias castle on FFVIII was just crap in that respect. |

I don't think anyone likes it. You've just finished the game and you can't go back, now what? It sort of ruins the replayability of the game.

Lets not forgot that this isn't just referring to Final Fantasy.
![]() I think this depends entirely on the game. In the case of an RPG, where the sense of adventure and exploration is everything to the experience, cutting off most of the world completely kills the appeal of the genere in the first place.. Though in the case of, say, a linear action-adventure game, exploration of past locations isn't really important, as ther's no reason or purpose for returning to them, so it becomes an irrelevant factor in the overall game.

depends really. Some games have you go back because there may be side quests which weren't available at the time and some games have side quests you can complete only at a specific time.
I prefer linear where things get altered but not inacessible. Sort of like Lindblum in FFIX where it gets changed but you can still go there.
