It was alright. I felt the first disc was a lot stronger than the second one was; while I liked the idea of
trying to make a metafictional game, I felt most of the characters in 4D weren't nearly as developed as they should have been
. My favourite characters were Nel, Albel, Cliff, and Maria, in that order.

ZOMG! I thought everyone hated this game... No one has ever posted a thread about it before. I thought it was a pretty awesome game. I never beat it though. My favorites were Albel, Nel, and Maria. I always seem to choose two females and a male for some reason...

Thought it was a pretty cool game and liked the setting and the battle system was at times pretty cool although not one of the best I've seen, favourite characters were Cliff, Nel and Maria. Only negative things I could think of were the voice acting was almost FFX quality (I seriously wanted to shoot Fayt at times) and the computers AI was lacking in places as they seemed to get killed every second fight.

This was the first Star Ocean game I've ever played, so from the love I have for this game I should download some ROMS. Oh ****, don't talk about leveling up. I spent over bloody 300 hours playing the game and only past level 170 for Fayt. Plus, has anyone defeated Gabriel? I got up to him a few times, but the son of bitch it too powerful.
Oh and as in characters, exactly the same as Aarons.

Battle system is real-time, kind of like Kingdom Hearts except (I felt) quite a bit deeper. Storyline is kind of strange, it starts out as a sci-fi but then a lot of the action takes place on a planet with medieval-level technology so it's kind of a blend of sci-fi and fantasy. I don't really want to give away too much for fear of spoiling the plot, but I'd say there isn't even anyone who qualifies as a real villain until the second disc. So it's kind of unconventional in some ways.

I've played this game like, 3 times and never got around to beating it, it just lost luster for me. Not that I hated it, I like it very much just that there was so much stuff to do and I felt like I was missing so much so I stopped playing..... I really should finish it.

It doesn't really matter; while they all three take place in the same universe, they're set so far apart in time that they don't really spoil each other, from what I'm told. I certainly didn't encounter anything in SO3 that seems like it could have been a spoiler for the previous two volumes, but in any case, I've only ever played the third game, so I can't speak as to the quality of the previous two. I do intend to get around to playing those at some point, but it's a long way away, really.

2 is awesome, 1 and blue sphere are average. Play SO2 if you can, it was much better than 3.
Also I wouldn't say the battle system is like KH. KH was a standard real-time action game system, Star Ocean is more of a pseudo real time system. |

If you want a close battle system to compare it to, Gamecubs Tales of Symphonia is the absolute CLOSEST comparison to this battle system. Its slightly harder and has MUCH more to do with chain attacks and it is so much easier for enemies to break the chain, so in essence, take ToS's battle system and revamp to it a more hardcore crowd.
