A couple months ago, Michihiro Sasaki, senior vice president of Square Enix, spoke about the PlayStation 3, saying "We don't want the PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them, but we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much." (yea i know, most people have heard this quote like a thousand times by now.)
This is pretty much irrelevent at this point because of the Wii's immence popularity and success. Not only that as it stands, Square Enix is supporting the Nintendo DS handheld system overwhelmingly, though there is still (very little as it seems) support for the Sony PSP. The company has 15 games in development/already released for the DS, excluding the Wii which already has a few other tittle's in development by Square. Square Enix likely realizes PS3 doesn't have ensured dominance this generation (kinda like when they chose the PS1 over the N64 many years ago), and rather than pool all their support behind Sony right from the start, they're going to let the market play itself out for a while -- case in point, Square Enix heavily supporting Nintendo DS/Wii over the 360, PS3 and PSP as it seems. Honestly I think its mostly about profit. Currently Square is massively making/released games on the new Nintendo consoles, which we already know the consoles has sold quite well the last couple months, which obviously results in profit. Final Fantasy main sequels will find themselves on PlayStation 3 (because of its power), but more importantly, Square has yet to decide who will receive the next Kingdom Hearts. I can't imagine Xbox 360 being on the publisher's radar, so Wii appears the only logical option, unless they take the route expected from Kingdom Hearts at the start: multiplatform. At this point, it's simply too early to know what Square Enix's plans are. I aslo hear rumor Square is selling some of their series off too. So until there's an official announcement expect anything from them. I don't minda KH game of any other Square games on the Wii, but i'd like to see a few more Square games on the PS3 or the Xbox 360.

The White Engine is being designed for the PS3, thats what matters to me. They'll probably take the Kingdom Hearts series to the Wii, it belongs there anyway.
As for their recent annoucement that they are using the Unreal Engine 3 for next-gen games, this is probably how Square-Enix plans to break into the FPS market. Dirge of Cerberus showed everyone that Square has no idea how to make a good FPS, and I think they took the hint. It'll be interesting to see what they make with Epic's engine. |

I'm not going to bother to read what anybody else posted, because it looks too large and complicated for my tiny little brain.
Square will continue to do what they've been doing since the PS2 was released. That being, remake every game they've already released 1000 times, and make an actual new game every three or four years. |

As far as i know the White Engine is only being used for Final Fantasy 13, which was originally intended for the PS2. As u said Square has switched to the Unreal Engine 3 for future games.

SE are giving the DS the most attention right now since it's got the largest growing user base out of the DS, PSP, 360, PS3 and Wii consoles so it makes sense to put your games where they'll most likely sell most. This along with the main series and Versus XIII on the PS3 and Dragon Quest Swords and FF: CC on the Wii means that they'll be maximizing their potential profit.
Don't know about the Kingdom Hearts series moving to the Wii but it's possible I suppose and the 360 has the support from Mistwalker so it'll get a few JRPGs to it's name. But in the end I wish that SE would concentrate on the new stuff rather than the constant remakes, FFIII on the DS was fine but FFI + II on the PSP is a joke since it's the 5th time or something that it's been released. |

You may be a fan of Square's games but it doesn't mean you have to buy every single one of them, if the Final Fantasy games are what you want most then the PS3 is the way to go since it has FFXIII and Versus XIII which are part of the main series.
The Wii games are spinoffs like Crystal Chronicles and Dragon Quest Swords which may turn out to be good games in their own rights but won't appeal to the average FF fan as much. Just go for what is best for you, there's no point going out for everything. |
