No Final Fantasy have been even close to having the impact of FFVII, and its just my opinion that each and every final fantasy after VII were successfull in most ways due to VII. What I've seen from XIII so far was mind blowing, something I expected from X, and hopefully after the release of XIII we can at last have the Final Fantasy to compare the next 5 too.

In terms of establishing such a large fanbase and running away with the genre final fantasy does owe FF7, seeing as it is the best FF, however it was FF1 that started the craze and paved the way for all the success FF has enjoyed over the years so to attribute all the credit to FF7 would be a massive blunder, even if it is the best.

I don't completely agree but cannot disagree as I'm one of those folk who only started playing FF when VII was released, I've never realy been bothered to what I to VI looked like or what it was about.
