Despite having played through the original game 9 or 10 times at this point, I'm still undecided on this.
Granted, Sephiroth was clearly not in his right mind went he burned down Nibelheim, killed anyone who looked at him funny, ripped Jenova's head off, was finally tossed into the core of a Mako reactor (or, if you prefer the Last Order version, jumped into the core of a Mako Reactor). But what about beforehand? He doesn't come across as deranged earlier in the game... but he doesn't seem quite normal from a mental perspective, either. So, was he a latent psychopath the whole time who just needed that extra little nudge to send him over the edge... or was it a mental break stemming from something so awful that his only way of dealing with it was to begin a murderous rampage? |

Or he could have just been pretending not to be a psychopath when he was chilling out with Cloud and Zack.

I don't think Sephiroth was genuinely mad before the Nibelheim incident. He appeared to be quite normal (as he could be), and genuine. I think that he may have grown up never knowing his mother, and having a deranged scientist for a father could have messed him up slightly at first. Not to mention, he was a general of the army, always surviving while others died. It can't be easy to go through all that and not lose himself slightly. I think the Nibelheim incident tipped him over the edge, with all his problems building up on him.

I go along with the idea that it was more to do with Jenova's influence that made him turn rather than his own sanity being damaged from the start although finding out the truth of his birth probably would have made it easier to accept her control over him.

He looked pretty sane to me until the Nibelheim incident. Just that he didn't question too much about his past and pretty much followed orders.
So it was pretty unfortunate that he stumbled across the library and his past, it would have been a rude shock to him, and all he stood for that it'll have pushed him over the edge. |

This. Also, I've always been of the opinion that without Jenova's influence, he would never have turned insane. Which doesn't do much for the "Sephiroth is a badass lololol" opinions floated by most of the most flagrant FFVII fanboys.

The way I always thought about it was he lost his mind due to the overwhelming reality of what he was, and jenova took him over in that time of vulnerability. Quote:

Pfft, I can't doubt if he was sane or not, but he was used as an alias [Along with Reno] in a murder a while ago, maybe Sephiroth plants the seed of insanity and lets fools like them damaged the sacred name of Final Fantasy. I would question the sanity of a man who's hair is grey/white at such a young age. =\
But, back to the game, he was a bit of a nut case, but in a world like that...whats real? Or normal at that matter? It seems you're all writing your own fan fiction here...

I think you guys seriously need to take a good hard look at your lives. You're speaking in depth about a video game. A badly written video game.

I don't think he was insane before Nibleheim admitedly he was not the poster boy for friends of the world but he was not killing everyone left and right. I think the ideas that were forced upon him real or not made him question everything about himself so his mind made up some random **** to deal with the situation in a way that spared his mind unbearable amounts of anguish.
After that incident I think he was totally sane he just hated and dispised all humans. Hating humans and wanting to be all powerful does not make you insane just very very open minded. |
