Default Final Fantasy VIII

Thought we needed a topic for people to discuss this masterpiece

VIII is my second favourite Final Fantasy, and was once first, due to its beautiful graphics, brilliant gameplay, effective storyline, and most importantly, the characters.

I thought what made VIII were the characters. They were all incredibly relateable, despite the difference in reality. We may not be pressured to save the world, but I felt as though I could find something of myself in all the characters. Squall was probably one of the better leads, and this game really built a real sense of friendship, and gave quite realistic displays of relationships.

So, what did you like/dislike most in Final Fantasy VIII? Discuss.

Final Fantasy VIII is my all time favorite game out of the entire series. I also have to agree that the characters are what made this game so special. I am particularly fond of Quistis' character because there is no other so far in the series. She is stuck in the responsible adult situation yet she yearns for other things. Like her secret crush on Squall. XD

The games graphics even rival those of FFX and can hold its own against games some games from today. FFVIII was the first time I felt something was portrayed realistically in a game. The musical score is also the reason why I became a fan of Uematsu.

Overall the game had it's act together for the most part. It did have it's flaws (the Orphanage Scene) but it put alot into perspective for future games.

Dude, we need to be friends, both of you. Final Fantasy VIII seriously needs to be credited as one of the most complex and amazing of the series. The awesome graphics were a massive great add to the games matrix. Along with both intense story line backed up with the addictive gameplay.

The characters were definitely unique and thats what was so sweet about them, Squall was a bit of a stereotype about not caring about this or that. I mean, come on dude, give it up, but whatever he did in the end. He maybe the first male character NOT to be mistaken for a chick.

Also, the other main aspect for me was FMV's. I believe they are amazing [The one's hosted in FFVIII]. The gardens design was simple perfect, let alone the idea of the garden in the first place. I also agree that the game did have it's flaws, but they were hardly noticed due to the amazing things the game had to offer apart from the main storyline.

construction.

FFVIII was an emo filled let down. the main characters were all boring self harmers and the only reason it has replay value for me is Laguna.

the battle system was flawed, the world was sparse and boring and the story stopped making sense at Esthar.

When I'm scared and cry like a child.
You're there at my side, like a knight of old,
To calm me and hold me a while.

I can't express it in words why I liked this game so much so I made an AMV.

Good characters, interesting story. And I was quite fond of the junction/draw system. It just seemed logical to me. I didn't really understand why no one else liked it. And even if you did junction characters with high level magic it didn't make them invincible.

And so the kiss became the cold.

I can't stand this game. FFVIII & FFX were two of the biggest let downs to me in the series :/ I hated the characters, and I know every game has it's plot holes and stupid plot devices but VIII has one of the stupidest i've seen in a long time.

The junctioning and drawing alone made me hate it :x

You pretty much summed up my entire opinion of FF8. XD

It did have good music, though.

I'm with The Doctor on this, this was a complete letdown with dull characters and world map. The story was almost completely based around Squall and Rinoa so everyone else was basically in the background and it had one of the worst plot developments in RPG history with the whole GFs erasing memories thing which was lazy at the very best.

Only good points I remembered were the Laguna sequences and the FMVs in it are among my favourites of the series.

Although I agree with the fact that many of FF8's characters were dull and emo I think that was sort of the intention of the writers. After all, the central characters were all teenagers and most of them acted very much like teenagers do. I prefer the characters from 8 tot eh ones from the likes of FF9 as they were much more realistic. You could argue that characters like Vivi were more "interesting" but personally I just saw characters like that as ridiculous. I do agree the characters could have been much betetr but I believe that the writers tried to make them emoish and whiney. I enjoyed a lot fo the story but it did veer off the rails towards the end and the main villain was a lso a disappointment.

I agree with you there with the idea that the game was made for a teenagers point of view and it did this quite well I suppose and would make it easier for some to relate to them but realistic doesn't make it more entertaining to play or see, games for me games are usually for a sort of escape from life which includes uninteresting, bland teenagers so playing a game starring uninteresting, bland teenagers was a bit of a negative thing for me personally.

Well, the title was pretty much made up of emotion, which it states pretty clearly. So, one would think that the characters would react in their own way, individually making the game what it was and expressing the feelings of the individualistic times. Yes, the game was on a emotional high with pretty much it showing at every corner, but, who in their right mind would want a storyl
