Default Holy crap.

Members on Fanfiction.net said I am too harsh and cruel when giving my reviews.

Remember when I said I had a friend wanting to build a fan fiction website and wanted me to do reviews? Well, he put me through a test on Fanfiction.net.

This is the story I wrote a review for. Hannibal: The Golden Pen.

This is my review.
Quote:
The writing was a little blah.

''She walked to the source of the voice and then found her boss staring up at her.''

Is her boss a midget or is Clarice the new jolly green giant?

There was a few other sentences in your story that are just like the example I gave you.

Also, Hannibal talks in riddles and you've failed to capture that. I can see you tried to make him sound intelligent or witty by using old cliché phrases like ''curiosity killed the cat''. Even though a fan of the books would know that Hannibal wouldn't say such a thing. He also wouldn't come straight out and tell Clarice he had a problem. He would lure her to him and manipulate her into solving it or drop clues to get her to figure it out for herself.

Clarice is also extremely out of character. She's a strong impendent woman. You made her look anything but.

Sorry if this isn't the kind of review you were hoping for. Just keep this in mind. Everyone has to start from the beginning. You learn through experiences. You will get better if you try hard. Put your mind into and don’t rush. Even this story can become a master piece. Just go over it and put some feeling into.
People messaged me saying I was too hard on this member, even though I tried to encourage him/her in the end.

Quite frankly, I'm starting to regret this.

Nah, being too hard is the common 'tear each sentence apart with your own negative thoughts about it' found on forums when Superius (a fictional forum character of mine who's sore spot is damaging his ego and retaliates with the post tearing) disagrees with someone. It's straight-forward, I guess.

I never found fan fiction very good at all. It's just not a good idea to try to do a spin-off of something. But that's just me.

Precisely.

Well, it's probably just my bad experiences with fan fiction. I tried writing it, and writing it, and writing it...but it just didn't fly.

So, in frustration, I often found myself kicking a hole in the wall by my feet, each shouted word indicated a kick in the wall.

"BULL!
BULL!
BULL!
BULL!
****!
****!
****!
****!"

Now, I've found decent fanfiction. They're usually thoughts or something like that. If I had to read any, I would prefer to read that type.

Pairing and romance just isn't my game. Anything sexual, I just click it off.

lol people said that was "harsh"? that's a damn good review. "harsh" would be a dumb useless flame with nothing constructive to say, maybe. yours is a "real" review, imo.

...and yes most stories on fanfiction.net suck ass, but like you said, you can find good ones, which is all I'll read too (unless someone asks me outright to review a specific story of theirs, then I'll oblige even if it sucks, because I'm a sweetheart like that) I'll read any genre, as long as it's good, including romance (I'll be honest, I love to ship)... but it's got to be done right. (I love seeing character development and well-written dialogue, for example)

anyway :x good job on the review, don't regret it! provided the author isn't senseless, they'll think about what you said and use it to improve their game.

That's not really a review, that's revision. So yeah, it's harsh as a review and doesn't really hit the point.

The fanfiction community has really gone downhill over the past few years, whether it's the fault of the writers or the readers ( dumb request fics, ******* troll reviewers, et cetera ), and "the pit" ( fanfiction.net ) is always a forerunner in why. This can always be argued with "but the fanfiction community was ****e to begin with," but I've been a proud writer in the genre for a little over five and a half years now, so suck it.

Your review's completely justified, and hopefully the author takes it to heart and works on the piece. Bad reviews are "ur story sux theyd never get 2gether u suxx!!@!" and whatnot, and it happens all the time. I'm not in the Hannibal fandom ( Final Fantasy and Cowboy Bebop are where I stay ), so I couldn't read it and back you up.

But you're totally justified, it sounds like. You seem to know what you're talking about, and as for the giant/midget bit of it, literary pointers like that are always helpful, if not always appreciated. Believe me, this author will remember yours instead of three others that say "U ROKK! UPDATE W/NEW CHAPPY PLZ!" I remember all my negative reviews, and I use them as constructively as I can.

You think that's bad? Go take a look at the Harry Potter category.

And about half of those are pairing Harry with Snape...

I have to defend fanfiction, I guess, because it got me writing in the first place, and writing's turned into my absolute passion, so. . . Whether they're other people's characters or not, it's all literature.

since a few of you seem to be good at reviewing, and from the sounds of it, writing, would any of you mind reviewing a work in progress of mine? It's an original story, I'd classify it as "high fantasy" and this is the url: Elfwood: Steven Stojcevski, 'Shadow of Power: Prologue', Stories

I hate how people say that to me also. I say one rather heated or hearted thing and they explode.
