Just wondering, what program do you use?
If it is Photoshop I can help you out a little bit as the Final Fantasy XII one is just slightly awkward with the white boxes surrounding the characters and the opposing colours make it too bright and cluttered.

But the brightness could be fixed by some little layer duplicating tricks, Gaussian Blur, and a couple of layer settings, this can also sometimes get rid of those white boxes the simple way, otherwise the Polygonal Lasso is the way to go if you are going to extract the images (remove the white boxes from around the characters).

But very good for first wallpapers, the Final Fantasy XIII one is a great improvement from the XII one.

((Just drop me a message, I'll even show you my very first wallpaper if you'd like me to)).

I used Macromedia Fireworks 8, and it is a little bit like Photoshop, but but not quite as complex and flexible. It was kind of hard to even just crop something with it at first, but yeah, the XIII one really made people happy

Ah, Fireworks can be bit of a pain.
Just remember that generally Fireworks comes with another program called "Adobe Illustrator" which you can perform the normal Photoshop effects in for wallpapers (I used to draw little decorations in it and Fireworks to import into Photoshop).

If all else fails, then you can always try the free program called "The GIMP" - especially if Fireworks is slightly confusing (Photoshop is fairly easy, if you need any help with it, I am happy to help).

It does sound funny, but it is a good, free alternative to Photoshop.
Plus side is, you can get custom brushes and actions (little things that artists have done, and saved their actions into a file for download) to customize the Gimp, just like you can with Photoshop.

I recommend it as you can crop irregular-shaped objects and other things.
