To tell the truth, I'm not even sure why I still use this screen name, other than that it's the one everyone knows me by. But it originated from a quote by Alexander Seropian, the founder of Bungie Studios, which used to be one of my favourite game companies back in the day: "It is better to be The Man than to work for The Man."

I stole the name Exonym Cerberus from someone when Yahoo! Chat was still the prime place to role-play.
Then I started using the name eXo on forums about six years ago. I moved onto here about. . .four years ago or something? I was still using the name, so I hung onto it when I made the jump. And now everyone just knows me as eXo, so I kept it for the rebirth of this place. |

Just so things won't get compicated.

I swear I posted in a thread about the exact same thing, but because I can't find it, here's the explanation behind Ulx again:
A few years ago, I started experimenting with programming my Casio Graphics Calculator, just trying to make a few simple games. A person I know made a program to demonstrate a few functions to me, and when you pressed the down key on the graphics calculator, it would display 'Jarr'. A friend and I found this amusing, and so I started making more games in the Jarr series. Jarr 2 displayed 'Gameover' when you press down and 'Jarr2' when you pressed up. Jarr 3 was more complex, in that you controlled a J and moved around, killing 'U's and collecting all the letters of Jarr. Sounds better than it was. A second and third level were added, in the second you had to guess a constantly changing 1 digit random number and on the third level you had to navigate a maze with invisible walls. The fourth Jarr was an aborted attempt at something like space invaders, and Jarr5 (the last in the series) is about Jarr evading a theta with a set moving pattern, and an angry U, and trying to make them collide three times. Over time, Jarr developed a story involving Jarr fighting aliens (this is from another joke I won't explain here). And further down the line (sometime last year) we began to plan a mock-religion around Jarr, claiming that he was the great prophet of Ulxism (we adopted Ulx as his last name) and battled the Spanish Inquisition with dual rocket launchers. While in the midst of our pseudo-religion invention, we decided some Ulxist propaganda was neccessary and began writing an Ulxist tv series, largely in a spoof anime type style. The religion died off, but this year I began writing the TV series (we'll do just about anything during class for laughs). The show involves Jarr questing around in various situations, trying to prevent the evil Ballard from collecting all five pieces of Xrago. It also begins with a typical cliched battle tournament called 'The Tournament of Fight'. (Oh yeah, I didn't mention this earlier, but we had an obsession at them time with the babelfish translator, as it is pretty bad, and were translating phrases from English to Japanese and back). Anyway the name of the show is 'Extreme Mega it is Pleasant the Straw Raincoat Pleasure Party Squad'. I might post an excerpt or two from it sometime in future, although no-one on FFE will understand half the jokes, as many of them involve people I know, or personal experiences. Anyway, thats the origin of 'Ulx'. As for Angry Bear, according to LR, I look like an angry bear :P |
