The Proposition

Storytelling at it's simplest and better off for it.

The basic premise surrounds The Burns brothers. Notorious criminals with felonies such as rape and murder. Captain Stanley, the local law enforcement, apprehends two of the Burns brothers, Charlie and the youngest brother Mike, and gives Charlie a simple proposition - Go out and kill your older brother otherwise Mike will be killed on Christmas day, in 9 days time. All of this is set to a rural Australian background in the late 19th century.

For the first half of the film you don't see a great deal of Charlie. There's the occasional shot of him travelling to his destination but the majority of the first half focuses on the mistreatment of Mike, due to him basically being guilty by association, and Captain Stanleys unorthodox method towards law enforcement. The second half focuses on Charlie finding his older brother, dealing with the dilemma of whether or not to kill him and then coming back for Mike within the 9 day deadline.

Really solid cast with some very believable performances. Nobody seems out of place or miscast. Ray Winstone in particular is great as Capt. Stanley.

The fight sequences all fall under the cowboy/gunslinger category and are violent but overtly so. It's a much more real type of violence and suffering as opposed to being a big spectacle.

Definately a recommended watch as it's a simple, well crafted film that is solid throughout. The only thing I didn't particularly like was Nick Cave's (and Warren Ellis'!) soundtrack as it was kind of hit and miss at times.

The Last King of Scotland

Watched this yesterday and was really impressed, particularly by Forest Whitaker, who gave a great performance as the former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.

The story follows the fictional Nicholas Garrigan, Scottish doctor who travels to Uganda to get away from the humdrum, and tedious life in his home country. He's driven more by a need for an adventure than by any sort of desire to help the less fortunate in the third world. Nevertheless he takes a job a mission hospital for a time before meeting, by chance, the new Ugandan president, who took control of the country in a recent Coup D'etat.

Idi Amin is enamored with Scottish culture, saying that if he could be anything other than Ugandan, he'd be Scottish, and because of this, offers Nicholas the opportunity to be his personal physician, which he reluctantly accepts, primarily due to the "high life" that the position offers him.

Over the course of the film, Amin's mental state gradually is revealed through Garrigan's eyes and he slowly and reluctantly realizes what Amin is. At that point however, it's nearly too late, and his attempts to part ways with Amin are blocked.

Again, this is a great picture, which I highly recommend.

Rob Roy

Got stuck in front of the TV the other day watching this movie. It's fairly entertaining, even if it is a bit predictable. Always liked Liam Neeson though, and he makes the the movie a bit better than it really is. But if you're bored, this ain't a bad choice.

7/10

Borat.

9/10

I watched it when it first came out and thought it was comedy genius. I came back to it yesterday and its still as funny. Even more so with all the people trying to sue due to the film and the way they are portrayed..xD. Sacha Baron Cohen has been funny for ages with his Ali G show, which i would also recommend watching. Borat would pop up every now and again in that show and was usually the highlight. This film takes the Kazakhstani reporter and transports him to America- like a fish out of water. I dont know if the rumoured Bruno film can be as successful as this one though.

Evil Aliens

I actually don't know what i thought of this movie. On some level it was quite entertaining...but it really wasn't a good movie. I'd say it never was mean to be a serious movie, and because of that it don't fail miserably. But it wasn't all that funny either. But still watchable.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Despite all around negative reviews, I went to see this on Saturday with my Dad and brother for Father's Day. I went in with extremely low expectations and I can say that because of that, the movie exceeded my expectations and I actually enjoyed it.

I don't think I need to explain the plot or anything. The primary reason that the movie succeeded at all was because it had some very satisfying action mostly involving the Silver Surfer, who was a blast to watch. I don't know what the general feeling is among fans is as to the way the filmmaker depicted Galactus, but regardless, it was a smart move and one that I thought worked pretty well. Having a massive purple robot-looking thing wouldn't have flown with mainstream audiences.

If anyone decides to see this, keep your expectations low and you should be entertained.

What did Galactus look like? I'll kill the director if he made him something different.

I watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang again today. I like it, I think the Dialogue between Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer is hilarious. Plus I like how the movie is done.

It looked like a giant space cloud or something. It just floats through space and envelopes a planet and sucks it dry and then continues on it's/his way. It looks a lot cooler in the movie than anything I can describe. It shows it for a brief moment in the second trailer.

Remember the Titans
10/10

Good movie, Denzel really brings it all together. The story was good, it was about football, and it was funny. Good movie.

12 Monkeys - 10/10. That very well may have been the best mind**** I've ever seen. I was sitting slack-jawed in awe of the filmmakers' ingenuity for most of the last hour. The story and writing was fantastic, and Terry Gilliam must be some kind of genius; not only was the film technically marvelous, but he managed to coax bravura performances from all three of his leads.

Appleseed (2004)

The human characters can look a bit robotic at times, ironic considering the storyline, and the story isn't great but I really do dig this film. It's a visual treat and the action choreography is top notch.

I am a bit of a sucker for animation though.

Hot Fuzz 9.5/10...Id love to give it Ten though...xD

Absolute brilliant, maybe even on a par (if not a tad better..xD) with Shaun of the Dead. Pegg and Frost are a really good combination on screen and Pegg especially is amazing in this. Youve got Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, Martin Freeman, Bill Bailey - even cameos of Peter Jackson dressed as Santa and Cate Blanchet too to name a few in the film
Some people might not like the whole cliche aspect and the homages but theyve done it to near perfection and its fine by me.

Hot Fuzz

8/10

Funnier than Shaun of the Dead but not as great a movie, still the best film I've seen this year. BB pretty much sums up what I think of the movie and what's great about it (never knew about the Jackson cameo though XD). And anyone who complains about the cliche feel that the film has is missing the bloody point, all the homages and small details is what Wright and Pegg have been about since Spaced. Only minor thing is I wish that Nighy, Coogan and Freemen had more screen time.

Maybe i was a bit overzealous with my score but i agree with Scrutator that Nighy, Coogan and Freeman should have had bigger roles. They popped up at the beginning and the end but i suppose it was a vehicle for Pegg and Frost really...xD

Shooter 8.5/10

Starring Mark wahlberg as Bob lee swagger as a sniper coaxed out of isolation to help prevent a presidential assassination. Without giving too much away, he is double crossed and the action commences. Admittedly i came to this movie with a lot of skepticism but i thoroughly enjoyed this, Wahlberg is back on top form with an excellent portrayal of the character.

The fifth element

Another of my absolute favourite movies. Splendid science fiction and Milla Jovivich is great as Leeloo.

The Good Shepherd - 6/10

This would have probably been a fantastic and moving spy film if they'd presented the story in chronological order. As it was, it was just confusing. There was still some good commentary on how an intelligence agency, unchecked, runs away with its own power, though.
