I have to admit a somewhat guilty pleasure in the fact that i do watch some more of the many series that it has spawned such as Deep Space Nine, Voyager and The Next Generation. Anyhoo at the moment the big news is that JJ Abrams is finally cast as the director for the upcoming Star Trek XI movie. Casting news ie rumours seem to come by every day and todays no different:
IGN claims to have the real scoop on who will be playing the new movie’s big three. The big three, for non-TOS fans, is Kirk, Spock, and McCoy who, in the original show and the movies, really get most of the screen time. IGN claims Matt Damon is indeed talking to Paramount about playing Captain Kirk. He’s long been rumored as Abrams’ first choice for the part. Now that the script is finished and JJ is set to direct, this would be the time to bring him in for a pitch For the role of Spock, rumor has it that King Kong and Hollywoodland star Adrien Brody is in play. Again, Brody has the right look for the part and he’s another great actor. For McCoy, another perfect name is being tossed around. IGN says Paramount is talking to Gary Sinise for the role of Doctor “Bones” McCoy. Sinise is a little older than Damon or Brody, which is ideal since McCoy was the older of the big three. He’s also got a great southern accent, critical since a big part of McCoy’s persona was that of a down home southern gentleman IGN also mentions Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Jin on ‘Lost’, as a contender for the role of Sulu. Then there’s Last King of Scotland’s James McAvoy whose name has been floating around in connection with the role of Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Spock...k-XI-4566.html Are you a fan of the many Star Trek series? Anticipating this new movie? Or cant you abide the franchise?

I'm a huge fan of The Next Generation, but the second TNG film (First Contact) was the last Star Trek-related thing I found to be absolutely stunning. Since then the franchise has been heading steadily downhill for me. Without Roddenberry there to guide the creation of new series it's been kind of fizzling.

Whenever i hear anyone decry something as Gay without so much as a reason, i have to seriously question why the need to gay bash something but also if the person isnt living in denial and therefore has to lash out.

Apparently filming for the new film begins this summer in time for a 2008 Xmas release:
Paramount Pictures has officially announced J.J. Abrams as the director of the next Star Trek feature film. The news was first reported Friday. The film, which was not referred to as Star Trek XI, will shoot this fall for a Christmas Day 2008 release. Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (the Abrams-directed Mission Impossible III) penned the screenplay and will executive produce with Bryan Burk. Abrams and his fellow Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof will produce. "If there's something I'm dying to see, it's the brilliance and optimism of [Trek creator] Roddenberry's world brought back to the big screen," said Abrams. "Alex and Bob wrote an amazing script that embraces and respects Trek canon, but charts its own course. Our goal is to make a picture for everyone -- life-long fans and the uninitiated. Needless to say, I am honored and excited to be part of this next chapter of Star Trek." http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/768/768337p1.html

Star Trek has gotten stale.
the same thing happened to Doctor Who, it got cancelled and left TV for 16 years (not counting the american attempt). I think it's time that paramount rested Star trek films and series for a good long time, let people miss the universe before bringing it back. i used to think that TNG and Voyager were my favourite series, but recently i've really got back into DS9. the climax of the series is stunning. Doctor Who > Star Trek btw. |

What did people think of Enterprise with Scott Bakula?
I have to agree with The Doctor, DS9 has become my favourite series of Star Trek and to be honest i thought the premise to begin with wouldnt have much scope to play with but how wrong i was !

Enterprise was awful. a sexed up star trek just doesn't work.
i didn't enjoy any bit of it. yeah, it was set before TOS but it felt far more advanced. it just didn't work in the slightest for me. i was trying to think of what i'd do with the star trek franchise now if i was in charge, tbh i'd leave it alone for a while. 3-5 years of nothing. then i'd launch a series called something like: Star Trek: The Final Frontier. with a whole new enterprise crew exploring strange new worlds etc. we got a lot of poor trek TV shows and films in a short amount of time and i think a lot of people just got bored of it. |

I didn't like the first episodes of star trek because of special effects (they were good for that time btw) and episodes with Picard are the best and with that female captain also (don't remember her name).Saw the few movies also and they are all disaster imo...

The new film is supposed to be a reboot or re imaging of the franchise and not a prequel as first reported, according to IGN and MTV:
While talking to the film's scripters, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, MTV.com dug up a few tidbits of precious dilithium crystal info, though they hit several roadblocks as well from the writers in their quest to confirm the many rumors swirling around the project. "Orci and Kurtzman … confirmed that the film is not in any way a prequel but a reimagining of the franchise," says MTV.com, which also adds that the plan is to simply call the film Star Trek -- with no subtitles, Roman numerals, or colons anywhere in the name. "We're not going to start totally from scratch," Orci tells the site regarding the look of the film. "We want it to feel like it's updated and of the now. That's actually the discussions we're having now: how to keep the look of the universe yet have it not look like nothing's new. It's tricky." The pair would not confirm casting rumors during their chat, including the talk that Matt Damon, Adrien Brody, and Gary Sinise are in the running to play Kirk, Spock, and McCoy (a rumor first reported by IGN). In fact, Orci tells MTV (apparently jokingly), "We never said Bones was in it." Kurtzman would only add, "I'm the hugest Matt Damon fan ever. If he became [Kirk], great." (In fact, IGN recently reported that Dr. McCoy's role would be a small one and that the story is more focused on Kirk and Spock.) Kurtzman and Orci also said that the film will be more action-packed than any of the Treks that have preceded it, and that it'll be the "biggest one" in terms of budget. "The economic models of the other [films] were very much based on the fans out there and their purchasing power," says Orci. "With this one we're going for the broad audience to bring people into Trek for the first time." The writers are less forthcoming in the interview about whether or not William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy will have cameos, though they do acknowledge that a starship will be an integral part of the film: "I don't know how you make Star Trek without a starship," Orci says. "You have to trek through the stars, so you need a ship for that." The pair does admit, however, that they have, along with the film's director J.J. Abrams, met with Shatner and Nimoy. http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/771/771425p1.html

a re-imagining?
why don't paramount just come forward and say: we're **** out of ideas so we're going backwards. because it really does feel like that. i don't know how, with the scale that the star trek universe has, the writers have run out of new ideas after just 5 seperate star trek based semi-franchises to the extent that they want to go back and start it all over again. whoever said that "the series has suffered since the death of Roddenberry" hit the nail on the head. in a world driven by audience figures and box office takings, the star trek franchise stopped being about sci-fi and started trying to sex itself up for a modern market. when paramount get to grips with the fact that star trek will never have universal appeal then they can get back to telling good sci-fi stories and not sci-fi lite, actiony, sexed up escapades where they try too hard to be mainstream so as to not alienate the non-geek members of the world. |
