Default Lord of the Rings

The Trilogy Movie was something I love to death. They were so cinematic and powerful and you can tell that they spent a great of time and money on it. The action scenes were astoundingly good, particularly the battle of Helm's Deep. I admit I found some of the Hobbits story a bit boring but all and all I can seriously watch these movies again and again.

The films are certainly entertaining, and it was, no doubt, a tremendous feat translating Tolkien's work to film. But read the books if you've yet to do so.

Yeah you should read the books. They are better than the movies in my mind, though the movies followed the books pretty well. Helms Deep was a great battle but I liked when they were in the mines of Moria and they found the dead darven city.

Yea I can watch this trilogy over and over. The movie had lots of things I like- elves, wizards, warriors, monsters, magic, action, bow and arrow action, etc. Has anyone seen them in HD? Does it look and sound a lot better?

The best thing about reading the books and THEN seeing the movies is you get to see the bits where the dialog is pure Tolkien. King Theoden gets a lot of the really cool ones. The "where is the horse and the rider....etc" speech, and the "Spears shall be shaken, shields splintered, a sword day, a red day, etc...." speech sent shivers down my spine. Him crying "Forth Eorlingas!" was also very awe inspiring.

I just think you get a much better appreciation for so much of the dialog. Also, if you haven't seen it, I recommend the extended DVD edition. It's way better than the theatrical version.

I never liked the triology in book form. I read all of them but I just didn't like them. The Bilbo book and Silmarillion was way better.

The LOTR movies is another story...they take the place as some of the best movies ever acording to me.

Meh.

High production values.
Great visual interpretation of the Tolkien world.
Smart casting choices.
**** direction.

**** direction? I thought it was quite good really, and I'm a film snob. Could be that national pride blinds me to it though.

I thought the trilogy was very good, a commendable translation of Tolkien's work to a screen medium, and very entertaining. Few films get away with being as long as any one of the LOTR films, let alone those that are part of a trilogy.

I might as well rub it in and inspire whatever jealousy I can by saying I've been to several of the filming locations, not on a tour or anything, just while on breaks and the like.
