So I went to see Babel with my girlfriend at the dollar theatre tonight, and to be totally honest... I didn't like it. I usually like that kind of movie too, I loved 21 Grams and Crash and similar themed movies, but I really didn't get anything out of this one.
There were a lot of really weird unnecessary scenes that I found took away from it, such as the kid masterbating, or the japanese girl flashing all the guys. The director is the same guy that did 21 Grams, and both movies had a very weird timeline to them, the difference was that 21 Grams was more messed up, but I liked it more in the end. Babel didn't seem to have any real reason for the random timelines, and it just made me more angry that it was all over the place. Also I don't even understand what the point of the movie is... basically everyone gets ****ed over except the white couple and their kids, all of the stories were connected by really pointless reasons (the japanese guy gave the man the gun as a gift.... why does that make him important to this movie?). I just expected a lot more, and wasn't really satisfied with it. |

If you like 21 Grams see Amores Perros. It's the same director and style as 21 but it's way better. Better cast too as much as I like Benicio and Naomi. It's basically like the Mexican Pulp Fiction... with dogs. Very good.
As for Babel I'm seeing it on Friday and the Departed tomorrow. Then I'll just need to see Iwo Jima and I'll have seen all the best picture nominees. And if Iwo Jima wins I'll kill myself. I'm sure it's good but I'm sick of Clint winning for his essentially well directed yet ultimately forgettable films. I really liked Million Dollar Baby but Mystic River was... average. Meh, I hear Iwo Jima's good but I'm still rooting for Little Miss Sunshine for picture and Scorsese for director. I haven't seen Departed yet obviously but it really doesn't matter. It's absurd Scorsese hasn't won an Oscar yet, his time is long overdue.
