Default Movie Recommendations

Whether youve seen the latest movie at the cinema, or have a DVD or film in your collection, what movies would you recommend to others as ones they must watch and why? What makes them required viewing for anyone interested in movies? Do they define a particular genre? Is the acting or plotline excellent and involving etc?

Since I'm in a bit of a Simon Pegg mood with Hot Fuzz coming next week I would recommend Shaun of the Dead, best British comedy film in years after all those crappy Hugh Grant films. Great humour used throughout and although it has some homages to other zombie films remains a great film in its own right. Fried gold.

More recent:

The Departed
Children of Men
Little Miss Sunshine
Jesus Camp
United 93

That's 2006 only. Someday I'll un-Jewish myself and make a comprehensive list.

Das Experiment

A German film based loosely on the Stanford Prison Experiment. Very very good if you like psychological thrillers.

Ive got to say 40 year old Virgin was one of the Film highlights of last year.

Audition, a japanese film, which starts out with an ordinary life like situation with a man supposedly looking to hire a female actor for a film. However his true motives are to actually find someone who could be his wife. This is the first part of the film- then comes the part what the Japanese tend to do so well, with the violent psychological stuff.

Little Miss Sunshine, Thank You for Smoking, and Lucky Number Slevin are the most recent ones I've seen recently. I don't watch movies that often, but Little Miss Sunshine is one of my favorites.

From really recent releases, I'd say Night at the Museum and Deja Vu are good movies to see.

I really liked Event Horizon. that was a cool movie.

I'd say Oldboy and A Tale of Two Sisters. The latter is extreeeeemely slow paced so be forewarned, it's absoloutely fanatstic though. Shame it took me about 4 watches to actually fully understand what was going on, and that was with the commentary.

Seven Samurai (1954). Directed by the infamous director Akira Kurosawa, it's a truly classic film that is widely regarded as one of the best films of all time. It's directing and editing are excellent, and it has a great ensemble of characters. The film takes you to early 16th century Japan, where a peasant village tries and eventually succeeds in persuading seven samurai to help defend the village from the wild and dangerous bandits that intend to raid. This film has a gritty realism that takes no prisoners, a definite "must-see".

Snatch (2000). Directed by Guy Ritchie, this film is a gritty comedy set in modern day London, whereTurkish and his companion Tommy hope to make some money through unlicensed boxing. As they endeavor to do so, they are affected by a chain of events taking place around them that began with the theft of a very valuable 86 carat diamond. This film is a good laugh, with a diverse range of vastly different characters.
