What themes or requirements do you look for in an anime? What draws you in your decision to devote time to watching? Are the Characters important- such as their back story or being well rounded? Is the Story or plot important? Does the animation itself have to be of a particular quality? Etc

normally what I look for is:
-Interesting or cool looking characters
-A unique storyline
-A talented artist (bad artwork completely turns me off the anime)

Action - whether with swords or fists but usually sword fighting ala Bleach, Rurouni Kenshin etc has to figure as a part of an anime i watch. Development of characters- their background, feelings etc, also the music plays a big part too whether its the incidental music or an opening/ending to an anime.

Music: Music plays a big part in anything if you ask me, music sets the scene, it creates the mood of the situation or the character.

Animation quality: I'm not too fussed on how quality works but it can't be quality like Rugrats or something like that as a example not that I didn't like that show :P

Action: Needs to be some sort of action, I dislike most animes without it.

Character development: I also like animes which have some sort of development in the character, I want to see them grow with the anime.

Action- Gory, blood spewing, people blowing up, slicing things in half kind of action.
Romance & Drama- What's an anime without internal strife and a little romancing?
Good Music- A must-have for any anime is GOOD music.
WoI, don't you know that's how they make all their money? Emo characters are like sex to them. Like Squall and Cloud. Look how things are going for them.

Character Development: Because an anime for me is not worth watching if the characters are have no depth.
Action: They must have action, if not, then at least a really good story to keep me hook.
Music: Needs to feel as if it belongs to the anime.
Animation: Depends, for me the best animation is fron Ah! Megami-sama. But I would watch something like Lupin the Third too, cause its funny.
