Default Literature and the old stuff.

Does anyone read any of the old classics? I'll include the likes of Dickens here, but I'm meaning more Dante, Virgil, Cervantes, Homer and other writers from hundreds of years ago. Mythology is included in this broad range also.

At the moment I'm reading Dante's divine comedy (amazing stuff by the way, I'd love to be able to read a non-translated version) and I just wondered if anyone else reads that kind of thing from time to time.

I don't go that far back; the most I touch of that is Shakespeare, and I'm happy to say that I'm pretty good at reading the original texts and knowing what's going on. I do want to get into Homer and Cervantes when I have a bit of time, though.

I do dig the semi-classic novels, though: Lolita is amazing, To Kill a Mockingbird is pretty typical and still good, The Great Gatsby is excellent, even if it is a "scene" kind of a book these days. . . I stick to that generation of classics, and I've gotten through quite a few of them.

Gatsby sucked. I love Don Quixote.

I read The Inferno when I was in high school and liked it. I need to read Paradise Lost one of these days.

Finnegan's Wake, The Fountainhead. Paradise Lost seems to religious to be interesting.

well, Blake did say Milton gave Satan all the best lines "because he was of the Devil's party without knowing it."
