Arcturus - Ad Absurdum Great band, this is one of the best progressive metal records ever released really. I know of no other band that achieved a sound even remotely like theirs; perhaps it's because Garm's voice is so unique in popular music, and this is so utterly unlike anything he did with Ulver (as wildly experimental as that band can get) or Borknagar, but there's something otherworldly about this record and La Masquerade Infernale that keeps me coming back to them. Five years after its release date The Sham Mirrors still sounds as fresh, as inventive, and as full of mystery and wonder as it did the day it was recorded. |

Åkerfeldt can growl like no other
Lunar Aurora - Die Nacht [The Night] I lied about Orphaned Land’s Mabool being practically unrivaled in 2004 because I somehow forgot about Zyklus being releasedd that year. Really, between those two and The Human Equation, that was an amazing year for concept albums. This is one of the most atmospheric black metal releases I’ve ever heard. It’s a life-to-death concept album using the cycle of the day as a metaphor for the stages of life, and the whole thing has a rather sinister air to it that really couldn’t be achieved in any other genre. This is probably my favourite of the four tracks on the album because of the mournful acoustic passage towards its close; the contrast with the rest of the album makes it all the more emotionally evocative. Classic album for sure. Soulreaper: Ruins is great, but I’m not sure I’d compare it directly to Lunar Aurora other than the atmosphere it manages to evoke. I heard a lot more similarity to bands like Leviathan and Deathspell Omega, tbh. |

I didn't compare Lunar Aurora and TROB directly musical wise rather then both Zyklus and Rain have both that rawness that seems minimalistic at first, but after multiple listens it happens to have a very intelligent approach to songwriting. Besides, TROB is very original. I dare to state Rain Upon The Impure blows away both Leviathan and DSO
Primus - Tales From the Punchbowl I've been in a massive Primus mood lately. Wynona's Big Brown Beaver can't be ****ed with. |

Better than DSO? That’s a bold claim. It definitely seems like the sort of record that’s only going to improve on multiple listens though. And I have to agree on the originality, a lot of things on that record I don’t think I’ve ever heard in any black metal before.
Anyway, not listening to anything right now, ’cause just about to bugger off to bed. |

but TROB is so much more disturbing, while it's quite majestic and epic. just listen to Blood Faults I: Thy Virginal Malodour and Soil Of The Incestuous. ( Those two songs also seem to belong to each other ) And those chants.... damn great. reduces Carnal Malefactor to forgettable. TROB has found perhaps the ultimate balance in disturbingness and epicness.Lunar Aurora - Andacht Since I've been obsessed with TROB I almost forgot about the last LA. Speaking of chants, some on this album sound kinda like some of those on RUTI. Still very good, but pales in comparisation of that one obvious album. ![]() |

Can't stand me now - The Libertines
i've had this song in my head for months and finally got around to DLing it. It's a very cool track and in a way it makes me wish they were still together, because they were just about to become one of the biggest bands in the world. |

TROB is more terrifying than DSO, I'll agree, but I get the impression DSO's material isn't supposed to be "scare the **** out of you" type of material in the first place. Although I do find "Mass Grave Aesthetics" somewhat terrifying regardless, but that's mainly because of the lyrics.
And Andacht is one of the best records released thus far this year; I'd probably only place Moonsorrow's Hävitetty above it, really. Akercocke - Valley of the Crucified Bizarre epic progressive black metal, as mentioned several posts of mine above. I don't really know another band that sounds even remotely like Akercocke. |

Belle & Sebastian - We Are The Sleepyheads from "The Life Pursuit"
Belle & Sebastian used to be called "twee pop", a label that they consistently rejected. Jack Black, in High Fidelity referred to them as "sad bastard music". Maybe that used to be true, but they've definitely pepped up with this album, their newest. It's progressive with elements of early rock, soul, and even funk in some songs, such as "Song For Sunshine". This is honestly the only Belle & Sebastian album I own, but I've heard some of their other stuff. There is a big difference, but I think it's all great stuff.

I didn't start comparing TROB with DSO, though
But my point was that RUTI is imo one of the best Blackmetal albums from recent years, and TROB might be the most promising BM act right now. Gory Blister - Skymorphosis Excellent Later Death worship. The only letdown are the forced vocals, the singer tries too hard to sound like God almighty Chuck. Still a fairly impressing record, with an actual great cover of 1.000 Eyes. |

Yeah, that's fair enough. If they continue making releases as good as that one they definitely will be in any case. I'm going to have to go back and give the Nagelfar discography several more listens now.
Hollenthon - Woe to the Defeated Hands down one of the best Symphonic Metal acts out of there, from the leader of cult death metal band Pungent Stench; it's just a shame that they only ever released two albums. From what I know he's discontinued the project, too, which disappoints me greatly; in any case, the last release was in 2001. Both releases are classics in the genre though, encompassing so many different styles it's difficult to know where to begin. Neophytes to black and death metal would do well to check these albums out, as well, as the styles don't really get any more inviting than this. |

I'd say give the first TROB, Unlock The Shrine, a listen too. A lot easier to get into then RUTI, and also an awesome BM release. I love TROB even more then Nagelfar, tbh.
Gory Blister - The Soul-Slitters Ctachy as ****, and very headbangable. Only the vocals bother me, but a band with high potential, this Gory Blister. |

Yeah, I intend to grab that at some point. For Nagelfar I found Srontgorrth most enjoyable due to it having the most obvious prog influence, but all their music seems to require repeated listens with close attention to sink in. Although I enjoyed the obvious Ennio Morricone influence on "Meuterei" as well.
Hollenthon - Lords of Bedlam I really like the way he worked Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet into this track. |

I'm one of the few that liked Virus west the mlost. Is it me or has Spermany the best Blackmetal scene out there right now? I mean Lunar Aurora, Zarathustra, Geist, The Ruins Of Beverast, Funeral Procession, Deathgate Arckanum, all real ****en talent, but somehow most people can't see past BM circus acts such as Nargaroth, Absurd or Wigrid...
TROB - Rain Upon The Impure again |

Yeah, Germany is probably the best country for black metal right now. Though to be fair, not all of Nargaroth's discography is laughable, especially since I'm 99% sure Kanwulf is just taking the piss in all of his interviews
Hollenthon - The Calm Before the Storm Hard to describe this track but it has a bit of a medieval vibe to it I think. The harmony vocals are good as well, but to be honest I still find several earlier and later tracks on this album to be vastly superior. |
