Ihsahn - the Adversary
remains a good album, even though I might've overplayed it somewhat. A little bit of everything, traditional heavy metal, symphonic blackmetal, proggresive metal, and some elements that can be considered avant garde. |

The Adversary was quite rewarding to me. It's really the closest thing to another Prometheus in his catalog thus far, stylistically.
A Silver Mt. Zion - Ring Them Bells (Freedom Has Come and Gone) I might have to recant my statement about This Is Our Punk Rock being the best ASMZ album. I forgot how great Horses in the Sky was. In particular, "God Bless Our Dead Marines" is probably the best song in their catalog, and I'd say this is easily the most overtly political album in their catalog as well. Great stuff. |

Immolation - Father You're Not A Father
Close To A World Below is for me the best album ever made. It's just too perfect. The production, the creative drumming, the technical twisted, dissonant riffs, the solo's, the atmosphere, the brutality.... It has everything I look for in music. |

Burzum - Det som en gang var
Varg's best song ever? Probably. Burzum often gets overhyped, but Hvis lyset tar oss is a masterpiece. Richard Strauss - Also sprach Zarathustra A "sound poem" based on the work of Friedrich Nietzsche by the same name. "Sunrise," the intro to this piece, was used as the main theme of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, and while "Sunrise" is unquestionably the most evocative section of the work, the whole thing is a masterpiece. One of the finest examples of Post-Romantic composition, imho. Cursive - The Ugly Organ & Happy Hollow I'm still finding it difficult to get used to Tim Kasher's voice but I quite like the progressive and conceptual qualities of the music. The political stances on Happy Hollow are quite reassuring to hear in (relatively) mainstream music that isn't Green Day, and both plot-based albums seem relatively unified. "Staying Alive" is probably the best song on either album; in fact I wouldn't have a problem mentioning it in the same breath as A Silver Mt. Zion's best work. |

Immolation - Here In After
I've been jamming the whole Immolation discography today, and now I loisten to the second best Immo record (imo ) Despite the horrib;e production, this album has such an evil vibe on it, which is unmatched except by themselves ( Failures for Gods ) The songwriting is top notch, and Christ Cage has got to be one of the most frightening Deathmetal songs ever written. Hell, even Nile ripped a riff from this song. |

Arcturus - Raudt og svart
I don't find this as compelling as other Arcturus albums or Ulver's best albums, but I've been neglecting it for far too long and it is rather effective. It's definitely far more black metal-oriented than anything Arcturus has done since. Drudkh - Songs of Grief and Solitude Mostly mournful acoustic music. Most of the songs are based on motifs from earlier Drudkh albums (for example, this song, "Why the Sun Becomes Sad," is based on a riff from Autumn Aurora's "Sunwheel," although the emotional tone of the music is completely different), but they rarely sound like they're repeating themselves. This album amply reveals how deeply rooted in Ukrainian folk music Drudkh's entire catalog is, and it's a nice reflective album to put on in one of those moody phases late at night. |

Tom Waits is brilliance incarnate. I really need to check out more of his work than just Bone Machine and Nighthawks at the Diner. I have most of his discography, it's just a matter of arsing msyelf to listen to it
![]() Moonsorrow - Jäästa stynynyt/Varjojen virta [Born of Ice/Stream of Shadows] Still the best album from 2007 thus far, as far as I'm concerned. Of course, I'm a sucker for folk-metal, for epics, and for prog, and this album qualifies as all three. ![]() |

Isis - Grinning Mouths (Live 2005/05/31)
One of these days I need to see them live. In this concert they did all seven songs from Panopticon and a strong case could be made that each is superior to the recorded version, sound quality excepted. |
