Question Crappy Kansas Driving Laws

I can't stress how much I hate the ****in ****ty Kansas government.

Just this Wednesday I was having dinner with my Sister and mother and my sister quotes " hey Nate did you hear what's happening on June 1st." And I'm like no and please do tell. And she tells me that the government of KANSAS (yes Kansas the one that has a lot of farmKIDS on it that need to drive at a little early of an age to help on the farm) is making the age of being able to even get a restricted license set to 18 years old. I'm thirteen and I only have ten more months to go but it starts on June 1st. Not only that but the only way that there allowing anyone to drive is by having good grades in school. Do you think having this system would be wise?
Do tell your opinion and the age that you are able to start driving.(wherever you live on the planet)

I didn't start driving until I was 19. I couldn't get my hands on a car legally before then. I know a lot of farmwork goes on in Kansas, and I sympathize. But, are you a farmkid, or just mad that you'll have to wait to drive?

However, considering the increasingly stupid things that driving-age kids, yes kids, are doing at an increasing rate every year...I can see where they're coming from.

By the way, thread name changed for great justice, and for clarity.

Thanks for the name change. I was at a writers block for it. (took me about 15 minutes just to come up with the first title)

And I'm just mad because I really need a car for many things and Kansas City has the absolute worst Mass-transit system in the entire world so it makes it really hard to get anywhere.

I was lucky in that I got my license at the regular age of 16 so I'm grandfathered in. As for your case, yeah it does suck. I know that you can get a license without having a permit at the age of 18 in some states though.

Well I go to about ten different countries about once every year and It's possible for me to get a permit in someplace like Russia and have it work here in Kansas.

Here in good ole Misery, when you turn 16, you get a partial license. You can drive alone, except between 1 A.M. and 5 A.M., unless you're going to school or work. Then, when you turn 18, you get the real thing.

Same thing for us for the moment only we get the restricted license at 14 and the real thing at 16.

I've done some looking and I don't see anything about the law changing. It says in order to get your learners permit you must be 14 years old with the consent of a parent or legal guardian 18+ years old and when you turn 16 you can get your provisional license.

Well they haven't executed the law yet. It becomes active on June 1st and if you want a permit on may 30th you can still get it.

I got my licence when I was 17, and 5 or 6 months later I got my operator's licence because I turned 18.

This might be a Michigan only thing, might not, but here in Michigan, people who are under 21 have a vertical licence, and people 21 and over get the classic horizontal driver's licence.

As far as the whole Kansas laws ar conscerned, its none of the state's damn business what you get in school. Its a poor attempt to try and raise the state's GPA average.

I didn't get my license till i was 20. Didn't need one before that, so i couldn't be arsed to spend all that money on something that i didn't need. And you need to be 18 here to be able to get a license.

Where is that information coming from? I just can't see it happening. The impact on the public would be pretty harsh as well. It's not going to improve teen driving at all. Also not every public school can possibly support bringing every child to school. Some parents can't bring their children either. They depend on them to transport themselves. I just can't see a law like that going into effect. If this is true Kansas would be the only state in the nation where you'd have to be 18 to get your license. Pennsylvania is the only other state where you get your license "late" compared to other states which is 17 1/2 years of age.

Or not? If you can't handle school you shouldn't be harnessing the responsibility of driving a car. Your GPA has nothing to do whether or not you keep your license. If you maintain a B+ average you get 20% off your car insurance statewide. The day you stop attending they can legally take your license.

I reitterate, its none of the state's damn business. And just because you have poor grades doesn't mean you're a poor driver.

I would be so mad if that happened. Here in Oklahoma, you get a Drivers Permit when you are 15 1/2. you can go anywhere as long as someone with a drivers license is in the car with you. Then when you're 16 you get a drivers license. Also, if you take drivers ed you can get a deduction off of car insurence

Actually it is. It's the law that you must attend school until you're 16 years old. From there if you have parent consent you can resign. If not you're required to attend until you're a legal adult which is 18 years old. If you're not attending school they're not going to let you work or drive a car. Hence why you must have proof of attendance when getting your workers permit/driver's license. Poor grades doesn't mean you're a poor driver correct, but at least you're trying.

I'm curious, but why is the Kansas government restricting the drivers license to 18 years of age? Something must have caused an incentive. Anyways, this measure would actually benefit Seattle. In Seattle, we can get a permit at 16, but we cannot drive by ourselves. Instead, we must have an adult in the vehicle if we are driving with a permit. However, most of teens don't follow the law. One example is that my friends sometimes race on the freeway. Every time I go into any of my friends' cars, I always feel comfortable. Now, if we had your 18 law. The police might catch underage drivers easily. It's easy to distinguish from a freshman and a senior. If we had your gpa benchmark, my high school's parking lot might be reduced to .....18 cars from a lot of 70.

I reitterate again, its none of the state's damn business what you get in school. I said that the first time around. You have a valid point on staying in school, but what the student gets in school shouldn't make a lickin' difference. Its not the state's job to punish teens for bad grades; that responsibility falls on the shoulders of the parents, weather they take that responsibility or not.

And I have a valid point for them being in your business about your grades. If you're not doing well consistantly it may be problems at home and the state might get involved through DEFACS to ensure the child is receiving adequate treatment. They do have a right to know about your performance so they can adjust education programs for problems. Who do you think regulates the school? The state. In order to get your license you must take a nationally required drug awareness test and pass ≥ 80. Who provides that? The schools. Parents can't be expected to educate their children about those because it's not absolute that they will be educated in these types of things which is why the state has made it a requirement.

Do some research.
