Hm, I haddn't heard anythig about this. I don't speak Korean but some of the comments below were interesting...

Please read Matt’s translation again, she actually never made that claim. She said, “…should be able to become…,” Kind of defies that ‘inherent’ racial superiority, no? Or, am I missing the meaning of ‘inherent’ here?

Sorry - I should have thought about the whole translation carefully and lumped all these comments together but here goes.

“can become” and “should be able to become” - I wouldn’t know which is better translation of “될 수 있을 것”. I just sensed it wasn’t “will become”. Either way, she stipulates that there is this potential given such-and-such condition.

As someone pointed out, “민족” may be better translated as “people”. The way it’s used elsewhere might fit better with that than “race” as I don’t think a set of individuals are lumped together as “민족” purely based on physical traits or genetics. Either way, many Koreans tend to think of our people as tightly bound by blood. So I suppose there is concept of Korean “racial” supremacy embedded in her statement in that way. I’m sure it’s a Chinese word (looked it up - 民族) so Japanese must use the word too. Though I don’t know if it’s used more like “race” rather than “people” in Japan.

The common concensus seems amoungst a number of the posters that the original translation was flawed and hence her statement was misinterpreted. Such things aren't unheard of and it would explain why the mainstream media didn't pick up on it.

But I really can't back this up one way of the other, but I certainly never thought of Han Myung-Suk as being an outspoken racist.

I cry laughed when the Chinese claimed they discovered people do have souls but only whites and asians have souls but you could lose it if you associate with dark skinned people.

When I read the title, my first thought was "Well we did have vikings, evil people and the A-Bomb so yeah we do pwn." :P

As for the article. Seems like one of those lost in translation moments. Sparing the fact that those areas do tend to get racey persay. I laughed uncontrolably when I saw a ganguro girl.

I don't fear North Korea for it's weapon ability but it's people's undying loyalty. Every show I've seen, the minders following the cameras wouldn't even allow foreigners to lay before the statue of Kim II-sung.

One of my friends went to South Korea for a semester and students at the college he went to got invited to North Korea and they did go and they went to bars and generals of the North Korean Army were buying them expensive drinks and they were paying for drinks and my friend said how he wouldn't let anyone buy him a drink or even buy a drink since the money wouldn't be going back to the people.

All I can do is pray for Japan because the Koreans have nukes and those bad ass games won't make themselves without some vivid minded Japanese.

But about the article it doesn't sound like she meant it in any racist way, I just think she meant it in a way as their population is very big.

South Korea isn't going to Nuke Japan anytime soon though. and the Japan is more racist then people consider. In fact. South Korea was the first east asian country to open a school for women and have facilities to help the disabled. both of which are viewed as burdens in society in those areas.
