While I feel it was a genuine mistake the US government neglected to notify the UK because they didn't feel it was "appropriate" at the time and wanted to wait for the right time which is wrong in too many ways to count.

You know, Im starting to feel that the military in general is really over politicised. It's looked a lot like a case of cavalry blood lust (a condition whereby you feel invulnerable and elated by the sense of killing with no recourse or potential harm to yourself, widely reported by charging cavalrymen once they had broken an infantry formation).
Clearly there should be an investigation as to why the pilots were not adequatly informed that it was a british convoy not an enemy one, although, as I stated above with the bloodlust, they probably knew deep down that they shouldn't have fired but you know what? I don't know why people don't expect this kind of thing to happen more often. You train pilots to kill and to kill without remorse because otherwise they'll be useless weapons. A rifle doesn't care who it shoots, so the person firing the trigger can't care either, and the fact is when it's your job to fly around shooting people, you tend to look for people to shoot rather than look for people not to shoot and it's a bit much to expect anyone to remain complettely rational about it because it's war. Killing people because someone tells you to IS NOT RATIONAL and if a soldier thinks too hard about who he's killing then he's a bad soldier. I think civilians ought to stay out of military buisness because I don't think the majority of us don't have a ****ing clue about it. I'm going to equate it to what I know because I'm not a soldier after all, but I know a thing or too about someone who doesn't have a clue telling me what I should be doing, and it's like this. I'm a musician and you can tell me what you want from me and I'll do my best to play it, but if you start telling me notes I can't play or notes I should have played instead then I'll just say 'You know what, you seem to know so much about this, YOU do it'. So here's my suggestion. If you're going to have a military, you set them a task to do and let them get on with it. Don't try to say that a friendly fire incident is a tragedy because war is a tragedy, and if you tell them to have a war, expect people to be blown up. It's really that simple.

That's one of the many terrible realities of war. It might be a reminder to weigh the cost/use of involvement in a war, and it might bring out some ill feeling toward certain high-ranking government officials, but on the whole, I don't think it really damages U. K. and U. S. relations. That **** can just as easily happen within a single country's military.

I don't expect it will change relations between the US and the UK, when we first got involved in this war the first thing everyone was saying was basically that we'd probably end up losing more men to our American allies than to the Iraqis. We really didn't/don't expect much.

I have to say that I don't think it'll affect stuff too much either, I wanted to see peopl's views as I really don't think it's such a big event as people are making out. Of course it isn't a good thing, but it's what we've come to expect, there's casulties even if they are caused by your allies. It happens in all wars, especailly ones with Americans.

On the other hand, the only Canadian casualties sustained in the initial afghanistan conflict (to oust the Taliban) were caused by an American air craft bombing them during a live fire exercise. The pilots managed to convince themselves they were being fired upon... From small arms fire, which is utterly incapable of brining down an F-15 ****ing fighter craft but w/e.
