halo thar kids.
So I've been kicking around the ideas of two separate writing competitions, and I have a thumbs-up from most of the staff, so I'm going for it. I've been writing, myself, for something like seven years and I know I'm not the only one here with a story or a poem in him, so I'm calling you out for a writing contest or two.
Don't submit anything yet, though. I'm just gathering interest, and the real competition might start in a week or so. If you think you're interested, though, please don't bail out once the contest starts; you're not losing anything by entering. It'll be fun, I promise.
I do want to remind everyone that this is a serious contest, though, so don't submit anything that you know is just wasting our time.
Judges will remain anonymous for the time being, excepting myself.
Now, the information:
FICTION CONTEST.
- Must be the author's original work, which does encompass fanfiction.
- The story can be any genre; make us laugh or make us cry.
- I'm putting a two-thousand (2000) word limit on the stories for the sake of the judges.
Judging: Pieces will be judged on a number of elements, including but not limited to:
- Grammar.
- Technical content ( commas, periods, semicolons, et cetera. )
- Spelling.
- Enjoyment factor.
- Re-read value ( that is, whether you'd want to read the piece more than once. )
- Literary voice ( does the author's personal voice show through in the piece? )
POETRY CONTEST.
- Also must be the author's original work.
- Any poetry form, from sonnet to free-form to pantoum to haiku.
- No length limit except 'reasonable' -- that is, Ginsberg's Howl was amazing, but c'mon, really.
Judging: Judging will not be as strict for poetry, as poetry is much more open to interpretation and modification, but there are some things that we'll be looking at:
- Proper format, if applicable ( rhyme scheme, syllables concerning haiku, et cetera. )
- Poeticism; cut-and-dry, while poetry, is sometimes not as poetic as insinuation.
- Enjoyability.
- Re-read value.
What's in it for you?
Why, a signature graphic proclaiming you the winner, if you're lucky. But the artistic talent this could inspire is what you should really be interested in.
So let me know if you're interested in the contest. An email will be sent out within the next day or two, and we can call the contest's official starting date as next Friday. Please don't send me any submissions before that.
Thanks,
eXo.
